I have an Apexi 2 1/2" downpipe, 2 1/2" high flow cat, 3" Themal Catback. It sounds pretty decent, but it's a bit to loud for a daily driver (my wife doesn't like it). Any ideas for a little volume reduction without affecting performance too much?

Sell the whole setup. Buy an rnr 3" o2 eliminator downpipe with test pipe built into it. Where the test pipe is install a "dump tube" with electric solinoid and put your stock cat back exhaust on the car. When you need it quiet close the dump, when you need the ponies open it up.

what Spln_Hrd said is one way, may not be cost effective you, but makes total sence all in all.

Or you could, go to a muffler shop, get them to weld in a resonator. It will quiet it down a bunch(will be slightly more restrictive as well) but hey...It'll keep the Wife happy :)

If I recall. When I wanted to just remove my cat and straight pipe it they gave me an option of adding the resonator(Didn't do it :) ) i believe the cost was around the $130 dollar mark.

His way only meets one of your goals(reduces exhaust flow), my way is more expensive. But either would work depending on how many geenbacks you wanna spend for some ponies ;).

A resonator would be a good idea. There are 2 types, louvered and straight through design. Louvered will quiet it down more but is restrictive. The straight through design won't quiet it down as much but is better flowing. The louvered is also cheaper IIRC. The straight through is basically a small absorbsion type muffler. Throwing a cheap bullet style muffler somewhere between the cat and regular muffler would work as well.

That's why two works better than one. ;) I also vote for you to take it to a trusted muffler shop and have them install at least two resonators, unless you can do it yourself (doesn't sound like it though). Have them put one on the downpipe (after the flex section) and one after the catalytic converter.

BTW, congrats on choosing a Thermal.

Hey, parallel! Now were cookin! Y-pipe exhaust! Yeah?:sneaky:

I think he's thinking of the pipe splitting up into two sections just for the resonators, then rejoining shortly after. Of course, I can't seem to locate a photo to insert. Without using small resonators or cutting up the floor boards, I don't see much room to even attempt this. Whatever.

Ha, I was just saying no duals please. But on a serious note, in series would be more effective at noise cancelling than if you did happen to Y pipe them.

Dont they sell at the end the mullfer the little restrictors i guess you can say, it bolts at the tip of the muffler.

I've always noticed that sound level is dependant of the muffler. I've had a bunch of N1's and they were always loud due to the 3" straight through muffler design. On my existing canister style magnaflow, it is definitely a lot more quite than others.

Can you explain what you mean by canister style? I never knew of any difference really, I thought canister styles were straight through as well.

I guess it's just crappy terminology I'm using. Oval vs. round is probably a better description. Oval mufflers are usually prone to sound more quite due to all of the glass pack that is contained in them versus a round "fart can" type of muffler which is a basic straight through design (hence no glasspack or anything) to muffle sound level.

You can kind of the see the two differences here.

FIRST POST!!! LOL .. Yeah i cant see it being that loud? Im running a home made 3" turbo back. No cat.. Just str8 pipe back to the muffler and running a magnaflow race style and its about as quite as stock foreal.. I cant really tell the diff..

Got it, and I've had the same experience.

Hmm...I didn't realize that 2g Thermal R&D mufflers were round instead of oval like the 1g's. Interesting.

I also recommend the resonator idea. Vibrant makes some really nice peices, or if all else fails...eBay!

I saw a Vibrant straight through style 3" resonator my friend had for his 350z. Needless to say, I'm buying it from him for my car :p

The Thermal R&D exhaust systems offered for the GSXs have more of a "canister-style" muffler than the ones offered for the GS-Ts, which have more of an "oval-style" muffler. I should know, I've got one. :D
