So I just picked up a 98 Eclipse GSX and it currently has a SAFC in it for tuning and I want to get rid of that and tune with something else and I heard you can use Evoscan and Ecuflash to tune 98-99 GSX's. Could someone enlighten me on how that works etc? The SAFC is JUNK and I have a 18g and plan on getting bigger injectors than 550's which are what is in it right now but to get the turbo to its sweet spot I'm gonna have to run 750cc+ injectors and you just can't tune injectors that big with a SAFC. Help please.

Your stock ECU is capable of any size injector and speed density. As well as ECU controlled boost and a ton of other mods.

Yeah. Maybe looking at $400 total. As oppsed to $495+$225+$155ish for SD parts.

This may sound so newb, but you think you could tell me what all I need to get going?

Speed Density on the 98/99s is still a new feature, I'm in the process of upgrading it to the 2.0 version now, which has a single 3D VE% map and is easier to tune VE. But SD is still in the testing phase.

Parts needed:

OpenPort 2.0 cable and Mitsu Flash connector - $180
EvoScan - $25
Laptop - $?
Wideband - $100-250, Innovate, AEM, and Zeitronix allow serial logging.

MAP Sensor - $50-120, support GM-3BAR, Omni 3&4BAR
GM IAT - $20
3/8" NPT Bung - $10
Pigtails and Plugs for GM IAT & MAP - Junkyard or $~30

Donation for CeddyMods - $?

Parts for SD cost $65-180, depending on what sensors you choose and where you buy them. The GM 3-BAR can be had for $50 and are external type, good for 1G IM or SMIM. The Omni are plug and play units that replace the MDP sensor on the 2G IM, but are more expensive.

More info on SD can be found here -> http://ceddy.us/?page_id=166

If you never tuned a flash ecu, you should get your feet wet tuning MAF, before you jump to SD, as it is a more advanced feature. And you need your car properly tuned on MAF, to build your VE maps for SD.

Seems like Ecmlink would be more of my option at this point in time.. I used to log my Evo with Evoscan, but I have never used Ecuflash. The only reason I thought about running speed density is because the clown that owned the car before got a intake pipe without a recirculation fitting and I thought it may be easier just to go with SD instead of getting the recirculation welded on. Also kind of another random question, the person that owned the car before as well did all these free mods to the car like the EGR blockplate and disconnected the coolant lines to the throttle body and turned the BISS in all the way etc and the car just doesn't want to idle consistantly.. I've got it to idle from 680rpm-900rpm but it won't stay at 700rpm or whatever the base idle used to be at. The car had HKS 272's in it before but were removed so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. It also has the CEL from the BCS being unhooked and replaced with a mbc and probably from the coolant overflow being a little ghetto at the moment. I have some 750 RC's out of my old Evo, I'll probably just throw them in and sell these 550 RC's.

It's not like you have to run SD. Since you already have a 98 ECU all you need is the Openport cable and EVOScan to get tuning. That's much cheaper than having to pick up an eprom ECU and ECMLink. Ceddy has done a shitload of work to get the 98/99 ECUs to where they are now, and there's plenty more in the works.

As for you car, it should cost like $20 to have a little nub welded to your intake for recirculation. Hell, if you were local I'd do it for free.

Reinstall the coolant lines for the TB, plug back in the BCS(the electrical connector, not the vacuum hoses), check for boost leaks, make sure the TPS is adjusted properly, adjust the BISS properly, and you should be idling perfectly.

I don't understand your worry. It's more complicated than an AFC, sure, but it's not any more complicated than any standalone, or ECMLink. Until you're comfortable with it, you just need to worry about the fuel tables, and the injector scaling and latency tables. Getting the injectors dialed in will have you at a nice spot since it sounds like you're practically stock. Check out Ceddy's site ceddy.us for some basic info on how to get your injectors dialed in, and a general feel for the software. Download ecuflash, it's free, and download Ceddy's newest Ceddymod. This will have a rom and def file for ECUFlash. Now you can go through the software and check out all the goodies, and you haven't even spent a dime.

I called some Evo tuning shops about having them tune the GSX with Ecuflash etc, just waiting to hear back now..

I can just buy a used tactric cable off the evo forums and its the same thing right?

As for large injector control, I am running lucas 120# I think it's like 1260cc on the 98 ecu. I am curious how big some of you went with this? Anyone running 1600's on flash? Oh btw, great system. I have messed with quite a few systems and ceddy has made this one of my favorites.

The 1600cc Ford CNG injectors that so many people have problems with on DSMLink can be tuned on ECUFlash. Several cars running them. $155 for a set of 4 1600cc injectors.

They got reviews because the people that were using them didn't know how to tune for them. I'll upload my tables once everything is done. They can't be treated as regular 1600cc injectors as they flow more at .5ms that 1.0ms.

Pick up a spare off craigslist for $10.00. That's what I did.
