I just bought a 20g turbo with external dump and hks waste gate. The guy told me the wastegate opens up at 18psi. Im just wondering what are the benifts of having a external wastegate and dump?? Does that help my turbo spool up quicker??

Do you understand the function of the wastegate in a turbo system?

Im not a pro at this , but yea the waste gate basically opens up at a certain point of psi so the turbo doesnt keep building psi and keep the engine from blowing up right?? So how would i go about changing the set psi which is at 18psi right now??

Do you have a adapter for this evo 8

Yea i bought the turbo with everything i needed to bolt it on to my 2g, i got a great deal for only 350.

Correct. The wastegate's main function is to divert airflow around the turbine wheel once your maximum desired boost level is achieved. The wastegate really does nothing to aid in spooling the turbo unless it's malfunctioning or stuck open in which case you'll get very low boost or no boost at all.

If the external gate has an 18psi you will not be able to go below that pressure, however you can raise the pressure to about double the spring's holding ability with the use of a boost controller.

I'm sure others have pointed this out already, but an Evo VIII or IX turbo will not work on a DSM without extensive modification.

Well the guy that sold it to me had it on a 2g already. From the looks of what it has it looks like it has the same o2 housing and oil line and everything. What modification where you talking about??

Then it's not from an Evo VIII or IX.

Oh, nothing....aside from the fact that an Evo VIII or IX turbo is a reverse-rotating twin-scroll while the turbos on our cars are a standard-rotation single-scroll. If you could install one with the compressor inlet facing the passenger's side, you'd have to remove the radiator for clearance:

Not my picture, but it just appears to be the newest Prothane kit. I installed a set which looked similar for a customer last summer....lining them up was a bi*** because the hole in the factory mount is off-center while the Prothanes were centered, and of course the Poly mounts have no give at all.

So what is the standard PSI setting for the HKS 50mm external wastegate? Would it even be beneficial in running with a turbo smaller than the 50 Trim? The standard wastegate only has two spring pressures listed which are 14.7 and 20 PSI respectfully. Would there be any fitment issues on a 1G if the wastegate was going to be mounted on the exhaust manifold?

A 50mm gate is HUGE; I don't know anyone that would need a wastegate that big unless you're running a 100+ lb/min turbo. Guys I know have controlled 35+psi on 80+ lb/min turbos with a good ol' TiAL 38mm.

Sweet! That is what I needed to know. I appreciate it. :thumb:

you can change the spring to a different psi spring or just control it with ## boost controller, the spring is designed for the last resort so that if you for some wierd reason didnt have a boost controller than it would open up at that springs crack pressure, for example you have an 18 psi spring so at 18 psi it would open up,thats what i understand at least
