I know that the 4g64 block bolts to their heads and that there is no difference in the 99 4g64 block to the 2000+ except the pistons. So does this mean that the evo 8/9 block can bolt to the 2g head?

it looks like there is 4 extra oil drains and 4 extra coolant ports all which could be plugged to make this work. Has anyone done this?

No it will not work, and if you can somehow make it work you'll be throwing a whole lot of money out the door.

so the transmission side bolt pattern is the problem? I couldn't spot any differences on that side. I did see that the evo block has an extra stud above the rear balance shaft by its id plate and it looks like it has slightly larger oil passage going to the filter housing. Thanks for the input everyone.

You do understand that evo motors face completely opposite of dsm motors right? That you would have to custom fabricate mounts, adapters, etc for nearly every single thing that bolts to the block right? A lot of work to end up with the same possibilities of a stock dsm shortblock. Do you just want to be able to say "I have an evo shortblock in my car"?

yep I understand that the 2000+ US mitsu blocks and 96+ evos mount the opposite direction of our cars. I guess I was just wondering if anyone with hands on experience comparing the evo and dsm blocks side by side noticed any other differences than what I already mentioned.
Please understand I am not trying to compare an evo 4+ cylinder head to the 2g or 1g dsm head... I understand these have 180* flipped geometry.

Hands on. . .I've been in both bays. . . No it won't work without pouring much more money into it than a simple 6bolt swap. . . That has arguably held as much or more power than an evo 4+ motor anyhow.

The DSM blocks and Evo blocks have slightly different transmission bellhousing mounting points. It would require a custom adapter plate to mount an Evo block to a DSM transmission. I can't find it at the moment but there is a thread on projectzerog.com where Bill that makes the RWD adapter plates posts pictures of the difference between the blocks. You can put the Evo 4+ head onto a DSM block however. It's been done before but the turbo will now be on the backside of the engine and the intake will be on the front. Look up Zoheb Razak, he has an evo 3 with an evo 8 head swap. Also don't forget that the 9 blocks have the extra oil passage to feed the MIVEC head.

Edit: Yay I found it! Project Zero G Forums ~ View topic - EVO bolt patterns compared to 4g63

Nice find! I thought that there seemed to be a difference at the mounting bolt by the slave cylinder. I wonder if there is a dummy hole (not drilled or tapped) in the 5fm33 or awd tranny where it would be drilled and tapped to mate to the evo block.

I wonder if the evo guys just leave that bolt out when they do the 4g64 swaps in the evo 8/9?

The 2000+ 4g64 block is "identical" to the Evo 8 block. Mitsubishi changed the mounting points on all 4g series blocks after DSMs. That's why 3g Eclipses can do the evo 8 engine swap and keep the FWD transmission. It would be nice if you could drill out the bolt holes on the DSM transmission slightly for it to work but like Bill said one of the mounting points was moved up 14mm. He could probably make you a custom bellhousing but there is really no point if you are doing this to stay in a budget. Just focus on doing the MIVEC head swap, that would be sweet :rocks:.

Agreed^ that would be interesting.

If you need proof look on my pro for pics. One is measuring a galant 64 and the other the evo. I think it was about an inch just from one point. Been a while so go check it out if you need proof i know i learned the hard way.

Yep looks like the bell housing bolts are slightly different. Heres a good shot of just how different.

4g63 turbo block in Evo 8 - evolutionm.net

It seems that with some machine work on the bell housing to get the alignment dowels into the trans this would be possible. I have a spare bell housing from a m31 trans may play around with this if I find a 3g eclipse block cheap.
