2G EVO IX OFH with B&M oil cooler on fresh rebuild

So I am very close to finishing up my rebuild. I am using the evo 9 ofh with b&m oil cooler. I am curious if I should plug off the oil cooler lines until after my break in? I plan to start it up let run till operating temp. Drain oil let cool down drive it about 20miles. Change oil again etc. But I don't know if I should hook up or plug off the cooler until I have done my initial oil changes.

I'm curious as to why it would make a difference either way. As long as there is oil pressure I would think it wouldn't matter...

I'm interested to know if there would be a reason not to start the car with the oil cooler unhooked/ready and look forward to some responses.

Well think of a break in of an engine with a new oil cooler, metal from the rings seating will be tracked into the oil hence the first 20 mile oil change. A lot of times metal will get stuck in the oil cooler so I am assuming that is why the OP is asking the question,

That would make sense. Protecting the oil cooler from the oil. I was thinking of it the other way around at first haha

Yes I don't want metal in the oil cooler. I'm thinking of just looking the ports with some short -10an line until I'm done with break in.

if you loop it though wouldn't temps get high with no type of oil cooling though and run the risk of the viscosity becoming too thin aka debris has more chance to actually make contact with the bearings? I am literally in this same predicament with getting my 6 bolt swap running in the next month to and I keep second guessing myself.

When I got my old car back together I was having some problems with the oil cooler fittings on the cooler, so instead of hold off on driving the car I just looped the lines and drove it anyway. Life got in the way and I didn't get around to hooking it up for at least 6 to 8 months, the engine ran flawlessly for another 7 years after that, so I think you will be just fine looping the lines.

As long as you're not hot lapping the car, you'll be fine during break in. You won't have oil temp issues if you loop for DD.

After the break in I will be hooking the cooler lines up. But I don't think there will be any issues of excessive heat. Look at ffwd they run no oil cooling air or water and use it on drag cars. So I have no worries for the short time that I will have it looped.
