This old joke needs to be changed:

What are the three most dangerous things in the world?

1. A mugger with a straight razor
2. A Jewish commando with an Uzi
3. A doctor in a new Bonanza*

Amend that last line to read: A ricer in an Evo

AMS threw a track day at Autobahn North Course (Joliet, IL) for its customers, and the Evos were dying like flies. One smacked a tire wall at speed and took out its entire side. Another blew its engine coming down the front straight in spectacular fashion. Others came in on "the hook" left and right.

The carnage was so bad that we had a second driver's meeting, where we were warned to slow it down, it's not racing, there's no timing and, because it was a Monday, all the corner workers and tow truck drivers had been recruited at the local bars, so getting cars towed in would take hours, not minutes (I made up the last one, but that's how it seemed).

First session: 4 laps, redflagged because of two incidents on the same lap that blocked the track.
Second session: Left the fans running, ran down the battery, had to push start the Eclipse, started the session 10 minutes late, got 4 more laps.
Third session: Really cooking now, running down M3s, Evos and Porsches, but got blackflagged for an oil leak. (Good thing, too, or the Eclipse might have gone up in flames)

So, not a lot of track time, but neither did anyone else. At least I learned a new track. Mostly, people stood around, waiting for the Three Stooges Track Crew to tow in broken Evos.

Only three DSMs showed up: The Blue Meanie, a green one and a silver one. All the rest of the Mitsu contingent were Evos. There were about 50 cars at the event. The biggest marque was Evos, but the usual suspects also showed up: M3s, Porsches, Vettes, etc.

Some lessons for future organizers of track days:

1. DO NOT allow pure novices on a race track without an experienced driver or instructor riding along. Nobody was hurt at Autobahn this day, but they could have been. It is especially bad when the ricer rookies are running Evos that have been modded. Imagine taking an 11-sec drag car down a 1,200 ft straight, then braking and turning in -- without any track experience! On street tires and street brakes! It's a recipe for disaster of biblical proportions.

2. If you run on a weekday, MAKE SURE the track gives you an experienced track crew. Otherwise, you may lose hours of track time while Mo and Curly figure out how to hook up all those Evo tow cables.

*From the days when they still made twin-engine Bonanzas. Rich doctors would buy one, then "augur in" as Tom Wolfe put it, because twin-engine airplanes are not that easy to fly. The same analogy applies here with Evos.

I find it funny that people can get in a car and since its "so good" they mess up (whether it be on the track or the street) and end up wrecking their cars. And I don't mean just EVO's.

... but it is even funnier because I'm sure some of them thought that their car was Heaven's gift to a race track.

Glad to hear no one got hurt, hope you enjoyed yourself, and I hope some people learned a lesson.

I kinda figured this would be a great idea for a race shop to put on a track day, its kinda like a window salesman giving away sling shots to 10year olds :sneaky:

That's why open track days without mandatory instruction are not a good idea if you haven't been on a track before. Even people with a lot of experience mess up. Imagine the odds for people who have very little experience and high horsepower cars. If you're going to do a track day and you have little experience on track, only go to events that guarantee you'll have an instructor in the car with you at all times. It's for your safety, the safety of others, and the good of your wallet.

The bad thing is people assume good cars make them good drivers. They don't realize that there is a ton of skill involved in driving on a road course and they can't just jump on the track and drive like they're on a drag strip. High horsepower cars are dangerous. Hopefully people will learn to get instruction before they let loose at the track.

Holy crap, it looks like the mysterious red mist befell the track. WTF

I would have been there if I didn't have this disease called Pre-Law that eats up your life.

And I still don't have my motor done. :notgood:

Sounds like one hell of a time. In a bad way. There was no instruction there, huh? So is AMS planning to hold another one, or has the idea been completely put out to pasture because of these incidents?

AMS had some instructors, but not enough for all the novices. Shoot, all they had to do was ask, and I would have been happy to instruct.

I hope they do it again. This time at Blackhawk Farms.

Unless Blackhawk has changed alot (it's been 25 years) since I used to race there, I think Autobahn is a lot safer course for novice drivers. I've seen experenced guys in the swamp and one guy t-bone the pit wall at BHF. On the other hand, the north course looked like it could be fast when I was out there for the Car and Driver event but they wouldn't let us go over 60 that day.

My point is I would expect more carnage at BHF given the same drivers.

Autobahn North has no rhythm to it. Word is, both courses (North and South) were designed by a racer, but modified by an engineer from DNR for some obscure environmental reasons. The DNR guy--not a racer-- essentially ruined both courses.

Blackhawk has character. It's also a lot safer than it was since they took out some of the more dangerous trees.

I wonder how many open-track events there are left in the IA/IL/WI/IN area before the snow falls ...

I know damn sure I'm going to the one at Road America. I think it's an HPDE too. Isn't it on the 27th or something like that?

The NASA event is on the 21st.
The F-Body (Speedseekers) is on the 14th.

I'll be at NASA. Stop by and wish me luck. I'd sure like to get through one complete event this season without breaking something.

Hopefully I'll be there too for some HPDE1 action. :D

Pit with us. If we can, we'll be near the AMS trailer. Otherwise, look for the Blue Smurfmobile. We should be easy to find -- you and I will probably be the only DSMs

The doctor killer Bonanza was the V-tail. Another interesting trait of the type was an ability to retract its nose wheel while on the ground. The NDT shop I used to work at near Oakland airport had FAA certification, and Bonanzas were planes we were called for fairly regularly -along with Lockheed C-130s.
And now, we return to our regular flight.

Make that 3 of us. I plan on attending as well. :thumb:

Right now the car is without a drivers side axle and wheel bearing due to some failure I had at Gingerman over Labor Day, but I should have things back together in the next week or so. Provided everything goes well when I run at Autobahn again in a couple weeks, I will be at Road America.

Damn, they have another event at autobahn sometime soon?

Sounds like a good time to break the motor in. :D

And I'll definitely be looking for the DSMs at R.America. :)

As Johnny Carson used to say, I did not know that.

I've been telling that story for years -- the usual third punchline is "a doctor in a new M3" because I've seen a ton of them in the guardrails at HPDEs. Then I tell folks that the original punchline was the Bonanza. Everybody just nods their head, and gives a nervous little laugh that means "WTF are you talking about? What's a Bonanza? Some kind of sandwich? I ain't gonna let you know I don't know what a Bonanza is, so I'll just nod and say, oh yeah, giggle giggle."

Now I can dazzle them even more...Man, ya learn something every day on this forum. Thanks, Defiant.

I'm planning to show up at R.A. also, if only to root fer y'all. I am going to be driving at the Speedseekers event the week before, and may not be able to toss the cash for 2 consecutive weekends, we'll see. If nothing breaks, I will bring your old friend, Rich, if just to represent.

Jim,

Mike and I (Jon) will be at RA the next weekend too. Anything new to "Rich's old friend" aka the black bi*** (or was that his other mitus...) Is Jack running?

Hey Jon, yes, there are a few little things new on "the black bi***" or as I now call it "blackcar". Its all in my profile. You'll like the new hood vents, I tested them (string test) and it moves a TON of air out. And yes, as of this moment Jack is running. We are trying to keep him away from the drag strip so as to remain running. See you at the track!

You came all the way up here to run? What event? I wish I would have gone.

So, Steve, are you part of this or just repeating something you found on the DSM Chicago list?

I see that they raised the rate from $150 to $200.

I hope that's to help pay for professional tow trucks instead of the Three Stooges Towing Team they had last time. Or to pay for the 10 instructors.

I'd like some assurance that
(a) they won't let rank novices on the track without an instructor and
(b) the tow truck people know what they are doing.

Last event, I think we spent more time waiting for Mo and Curly to figure out where to put the tow cable on all the wrecked and blown Evos than we did on the track.

I'm not sure I want to spend $200 to sit around waiting for tow trucks.

Just repeating what showed up in my inbox. You would have to ask them how Round 2 of EVO Carnage is going to be different from Round 1.
