I am looking for some "newbie" advice here. I have an old Talon (135K!) with the original 14b still on it. The turbo is blown. I want to upgrade to a 16g because they seem to be a reasonable price and better performance. I was wondering if this would be a wise upgrade for the money, I have seen them as cheap as $560. I only have about $700 in all to spend so if anyone knows of other things that I should do to the car along with putting a new turbo on that would be great. Also... I thought about saving money and rebuilding the stock 14b... anyone have experience witht this, is it even worth the time or money? Any other suggestions to maximize my spending and cars power? Thanks for the help

you can run the 16g...but without fuel mods you wont be able to get much out of it. If your really looking to save money see how much it's gonna cost you to rebuild your 14b and get it ported. either way it goes you will gain some performance.

What are your goals?

For older cars like ours (my 90 is @ 139k!), I'd recommend doing all the maintenance required first. Then try to open up the exhaust side with a catback and downpipe. You can find a good used 14b for $150-200 easy. Use the rest on exhaust and fuel pump. Ever try 18psi on that 14b? You'll be surprised at what it can do. :thumb:

Throwing on an Evo3 B16g without taking care of the basics just spells trouble down the line. Take care of the basics first (fuel/exhaust/clutch), then you'll be better prepared for more boost later on.

I was in a very similar situation as you were. Blown 14b with 145K and I decided to upgrade to the 16g. I am really happy with it, although I wish I had the supporting mods to turn up the boost. If you can get a ported or rebuilt 14b for a reasonable amount of money, I would recommend doing that. Only because that mileage is not the time to start serious modding. It's still up to you though. A good 16g will take up most of your $700 so budget wisely.

Hope that helps
