Ethanol based injector gum

WOW! its been along time since I have been on!.

Anyways I have a quick question and as I am at work, dont have the time to do a detailed search and read 100 posts..

Way back right before I phased out, there was a new fuel treatment that supposedly stopped the black goo build up on injector tips from ethanol based fuels.

Is this stuff still around and or does it actually work?
I have fallen DEEP! into the boating world and these guys are all cursing ethanol based fuel.
Namely all of the side effects DSM guys have been feeling for years.

I can tell you now, these boat guys WILL NOT spen the 1k or more to have injectors cleaned every 6 months and or wont do it themselves.
They cry about fuel lines degrading and blowing engines. but will not change to alcohol friendly hose or do the preventative maintenance to run said fuel.


So, whats the answer to the buildup?

I know that some marinas around here only sell ethanol-free gas. I only wish I could buy it for my car too.

From my understanding, running a tank of pump gas every so often will 'clean out' the black goo that forms on the injectors due to ethanol use.

Holy crap, I need to be in the injector cleaning business.

There is no silver bullet for preventing buildup. The best approach is to run a blend of gas and ethanol, 60ethanol/40pumpgas works for a local guy; run a tank of pumpgas through the system whenever the symptoms start to appear; or pull the injectors and clean them, which realistically only takes about an hour.

The additive that was promoted here last summer proved to be ineffective, as a bottle was sent out here to the same local mentioned above, who has the problem worse than anyone else I've met. It did absolutely nothing to resolve his issues.

The degree to which cars are affected is all over the place, too. My car barely sees a light film of the goo after 6 months of driving, while others have a noticeable/annoying buildup after only a few tanks. This thread is a good read, from a local board...grab a beer, it's a long one.

Agreed...however, most people won't go the full 9 for their car.

I've run e85 in my SRT4 for 2 years, RC750's returnless so close to 900cc at 58psi. Straight e85, pulled the injectors before I got rid of them and they looked brand new.

There are dozens of people around here who use e85, and the variables in their fuel systems say otherwise. I have a completely stock system except for my pump, afpr, and injectors, and don't see any buildup to speak of. Others have all new lines, filters, pump, injectors, rail, afpr...all ethanol 'safe', and still get the goo.

If you have a known recipe for avoiding the buildup, please share it, as it is totally random and not attributable to any particular component thus far.

As long as there no water interferences the will be no gunky. Just change the fuel injector seals.

With E85 there is a black goo that sometimes develops on the injectors. I'm not sure if it depends on the fuel, injectors, or both. I have a set of injectors that look almost plugged by black goo in a sort time, and another set that's nearly clean after a year.

My understanding is that the goo doesn't come from the ethanol itself but from the additives that are put in the e85 blend. Different gas stations will have different additives so some people may get the goo and some will not. In either case running pump gas once every 6 months will make sure you have no goo.

How do avoid water interference. I get the goo and everyhing is new and has been replaced multiple times. Lik stated it's found to be random gas stations here. People have had this issue for years in colorado with the biggest dsm guys here trying to fix it with no luck.

Really?!? Didn't know it came back down to each of the gas stations causing the goo. So much for people ever trusting and using e85 in American cars with flex fuel capabilities.

Someone should really bring this up to the government if it's true. I'm pretty sure that it's one of Obama's top agendas for lowering greenhouse emission effects and burning cleaner fuel than gasoline that helps decrease our dependence on petroleum.

Well here's the prob, these guys don't run e85, and their engines are gumming up.
They are running standard pump gas. 90% of these guys hate ethanol blended fuels
so bad the are willing to drive 2 hours out of the way to get straight gasoline!

With that said what could be causing boat engines to gum up so fast on e10?
And why would their fuel lines be rotting within a year? From the inside out.
Is it possible stabill could be causing it? They all use stabill and various other cleaner/
stabalizers.

Been doing the boat thing longer than DSMs. While we've had our issues, we've not had such huge problem with buildup. The only additive we ever use is methyl-hydrate to prevent moisture in the tank.

Has anyone tried a can of running a can of seafoam in the gas every couple of months? That stuff cleans damn near anything and everything. It might be worth a shot
