Hooray for first thread posted on DSMTuners!
I recently got a 97 Eclipse GS-T with 150k miles on it, so I had the engine of an Evo III (50k miles) ripped and swapped. I changed the belts, got it realigned and tuned, and was wondering if anyone here has done this before, or knows what my threshold for power was?

I'm currently running 1 bar on the upgraded Big 16G Turbo, and FMIC. It's all stock internals. HKS turbo timer AFC Neo Fuel Piggy Back (needs retuning) but I haven't gotten a lot of time to fool around with them. GReddy Evo exhuast and
Pacesetter Tubular manifold are the only other performance mods done.
I'm trying to baby this car until I know exactly how much I can push it without ruining my engine. I'm hoping to get around 400 bhp, but I understand that may be just out of reach for a stock engine.

Also, I've got about a $1,000 to spend on this car for the next few weeks, and was wondering how to spend it wisely. I was thinking of getting a standalone ECU; does this seem like a good idea? or would it seem reasonable that to get past 400bhp, i might want to put that money toward a good 4g63 block, and build it from the ground up?

I don't know... what do you all think?

Or, my mom's boyfriend has an 09 'vette. Should I just swap his supercharged LS7 and hope he doesn't notice? HAHAHA he's a jerk....

I run the evo ecu with ecuflash personally but everyone seems to love dsmlink more and its slightly more tuner/user friendly although both are easy to use.

I'd do this:

Walbro 255
Adjustable FPR
dsmlink
wideband

Read about tuning, you use a laptop to log with dsmlink. The things expensive but i wish i were going that route, i've just sent off a afc for retuning by apexi. I'll be using that to run the eIII16g, some rc 550's and a whine bro 190. But I wish i could afford dsmlink since it allows for timing control, better tunning. The ecmlink website says they're working on a $345 1g/2g light version so thats better than the normal version's price, hopefully we'll see that soon.
As far as that c6 vette goes, well some gi out here had a c6 (vert) with a bolt on supercharger (vortec), it was fast, very fast, but I've been in 4g powered cars that are as fast too. Its just all about the $. Besides the point kinda, GET A LOGGER AND/OR WIDEBAND AT ONCE. These items will allow you to make educated decisions on what you adjust on your vehicle. (so you don't blow your shit up)

:talon:

Evo3 motor has no other benefit. Its just a 7 bolt motor. Nothing fancy, nothing great, nothing I'd jump over a fence for. All you get is the "im JDM" perk. I'd rather rock a stock 6bolt bottom end, ARP Head studs, MLS gasket, kelford cams, SMIM, HX40, E85, DSMlink, 1000cc injectors, and a 255 pump.

LOL jumping from stock motor and no mods to running a hx40, cams, smim, and E85 (if virginia is lucky enough to have it since NEPA isnt). Why not push that 40 to its true potential and build the block that point.

Agreed that the evo3 isnt anything special besides some added bonuses stock vs stock like a black top cas, external oil cooler, slightly higher comp, evoIII turbo, 510 injectors, and diff exhaust pieces which can all be changed on a regular 7bolt anyways. If your in need of an engine and are buying one online and are taking a chance with JDM motors the EvoIII isnt a bad way to go because its setup quite nicely for a nice DD.

If your EvoIII motor is the same as the 7 bolt 2g motor, besides what you've just mentioned, then i'd be worried about crank walk. Swap out that 7 bolt with a 1g 6 bolt, keep your 16g, run 550 injectors, rewire your stock pump, and get an eprom ecu and dsmlink. Link is so easy to work with and learn. Not to mention that the sky's the limit as far as what you can do with it.

Its highly over-rated...crank walk is not as big of a problem as people make it out to be if it has the 7 bolt in it already I wouldnt waste the money unless it wasnt healthy.

True, but whats your point? Injectors can be changed haha

My point is, because it was mentioned earlier that the evo3 had 560cc injectors. I was correcting that so the OP doesnt think hes running larger injectors then what he has.
Going with the 6 bolt swap or keeping the 7bolt. Wether to build it or not because of crankwalk, and crankwalk in general has been debated over and over because everyone has there own opinion on it. I agree though, why spend the extra money if what you have is fine.

Evo3 - 510cc
Evo8/9 560cc

I do agree with jjgrizz73 on crankwalk being overrated. If it happens, it happens. The evo3 7bolts didn't come out of the same plant in Normal, IL as the DSM 7 bolt counterparts. If you are building a car and expecting to race/drive it spiritly/beat the crap out of it. Expect it to blow up. There are a 1,000,000 things that can break, leak, fail, blow up, burn down on these cars. 7bolt guys just have 1,000,001. Oh well.

The evo3 7bolts didn't come out of the same plant in Normal, IL as the DSM 7 bolt counterparts.

The problem with the 7-bolts that came out of Normal IL is that they were mismatching bearings and cranks. That is why they would crankwalk. The Evo 3 engine should be fine.

To the OP, I would set your sights on getting that power to the ground seeing that you have a GST. Unless you plan on doing highway runs, I would spend money on suspension, tires, and a limited slip differential. Then take the 16g and 510cc injectors (maybe get a little bigger injectors) as far as they will go. Get an exhaust, a 190 or 255 pump, FPR, front mount intercooler, SAFC or 2.0 cable & Ceddymods for tuning (I just bought a 2.0 cable and can't wait to get started using Ceddymods).

Proove this mismatching crank and bearing theory of yours. When you build a motor you check tolerances for oil clearance and crank end play. Mistu checks this when they assemble the motors (well I'd hope so). Any bearing failure is always due to lubrication failure.

I have no proof. It's just what I've read on here and a few other places. 97-99 Aren't as known for crank walk due to a revised thrust bearing design. I think 99 was revised again and is similar to the EVo style split thrust bearing.

Sorry to the OP for getting off topic.

Fixed.
It's not like contamination is never to blame.
Can't count how many open 2g MASs I've seen.

Contamination IS a lubrication failure. I left it as "Lubrication Failure" to be broad. To account for anything in that general field that the oil isnt doing its job whether it be lack of oil, loss of oil, dead oil pump, contaminated oi, crappy build by someone who's never heard of plastigauge, or a dial indicator etc.

:coy: I read too fast.:D

E III Motor has a weak piston design and toothpick rods to reduce rotating mass - 17psi max
