So confused. The way I see it right now...EPROM does not come on 99 dsms and cannot be converted to the, either? I read many forums and that what I got from it all. True or not true? Can I send my 99 ecu to ecmlink to convert it to EPROM?

check out dsmlink.com for more info. 99 and 98s have a black box flashable ecu. EPROMs for 2gs only came in like 95s.

That sucks. So whats another alternative? What's another tune that will actually work with a 99 ecu? Maybe one that isn't piggyback or doesn't need EPROM

Ecuflash and evoscan are you're only real tuning solution. You need to pick up the 2.0 Tactrix cable for around $200 and purchase evoscan. Use that to log and ecuflash to edit the Rom.

An alternative to use ecmlink would be to find a 97 Ecu and send it off to be converted. There's no need to invert the cas signal or swap plug wires with a 97 Ecu for 98+ cars as the ecus are essentially the same (minus flashing capabilities of course). It has to be a 97 Ecu to be a true plug and play. The part number is floating around for it on the ecm wiki.

You can put link in a 99, you'll just need a corresponding Ecu from a 95-97 that's either converted or a 95 EPROM. Or like mentioned ecuflash/evo scan route. You can get a tactrix 2.0 (tuning cable) for $200 from tactrix.com, evoscan (logging program) for $25 from evoscan.com, and ecuflash (the actual tuning program) for free from openecu.org. Purchase a wideband of your choice for $200 or so and you're all set to tune for ~$425.

Another option to extend your ecuflash capabilities would be to put an evo 8 Ecu in.

I personally sold off all my link stuff and have gone evo Ecu in all my dsms

And ecu flash/evo would be a beginner friendly way to go? I'm sure I could figure it out for the most part but if its way advanced then I don't wanna mess anything up

Beginner friendly, eh.... not so much. It's quite a bit more advanced and hands on than link and requires a bit more indepth knowledge. That being said, I taught myself how to tune using flash. Evom has boat loads of information and great tutorials on getting started to as advanced as you want. I spent a few weeks just reading over and over the tutorials to make sure I fully understood what I was reading and the process. When I went to link it was a cake walk, almost does it for you.

As long as you're not going full blown build right off the bat ecuflash would be a great way to learn. Once you understand flash, most other softwares are nothing in comparison. Browse through this article, it's a bit outdated now, but all the information still applies. The actual application of it is the only thing that really changes as ecuflash has been updated with more/new features to make it easier.

I know this thread is a bit dated, but for the archives I wanted to mention a couple things that weren't brought up before.

First, we do have a page on running ECMLink in a 98/99 DSM along with a complete explanation of the issues and options.

Use ECMLink in a 98/99 DSM

Second, we can also modify 95 EPROM ECUs and 95/96 non-EPROM ECUs to be compatible with the non-95/96 cam angle sensors now. It's actually a pretty trivial change on the ECU's PCB to basically convert the ECU to a 97 style ECU. So, in effect, any 95-97 ECU can be used in any 2G DSM now. It just needs to be configured accordingly.
