Just got done pulling my engine and replacing and resealing most everything and finally got everything put back together and I go to prime the engine and nothin. No noise, no click, just the sound of the fuel pump☠️ Checked some forums and confirmed I had the starter correctly hooked up, checked the relay, and everything checks out. Then again I’m very bad with wiring and could be missing something! Anyone have any suggestions?

    Picture of starter below

Often times, the small ground wire that connects to the starter falls off and can cause that. Make sure that wire is grounded properly and hooked onto the starter properly. Also, you can try jumping the starter relay (behind the center consul) and see if that works. Make sure you are getting power to the starter as well as the positive wire is hooked up to the battery.

Prior to pulling the motor, the car started with that starter? Makes sure you have all the grounds installed. They dont need to be in the exact spots . However make sure you have multiple. I have one on the tranny to block bolt, head, starter and alternator.

Yes that starter worked great prior to pulling the engine! I’ll check all my grounds I also have three though and I’m pretty sure they’re all on I’ll double check though!!

When i swapped my blown motor 420a same thing.. I was like ok her we go......................nothing
All i could say is OMG...
My wife being their to witeness the moment stated.. " check to make sure everything is hooked up!"

thanks to the professional advice everything looked good up top but on the back side of the block
Under the intake was a connector not hooked up. Just to make sure we double check our work.

If the starter worked fine prior to the project. Im not saying the starter is or isnt the issue. When you turn the key to on, all the lights and sounds come on. Then when you try to start the car, you should get a click or some type of reaction. You can also use a multimeter to make sure your getting power to the starter prior to buying a new one. If you want, have your starter tested and then you can order one on the spot. I was having issues with my starter right after I did my engine pull and battery relocation project. Since my battery is in the trunk, I ran a 0g wire to the battery and I think it helped.

My theory is, the tranny to block bolt gets the large 0g wire so all the sensors are grounded. I also dont do electrical stuff. I pretty much just know how to see if I have power or not. You can also check the relay under the radio and see if it clicks while trying to start the car. The relay is different from 95-96 and 97-99. But they have black/yellow and black/red. I believe there is 4 wires on this relay. I believe autos have 5 on this relay but I can be wrong on this one. If you are having a hard time, I can grab a picture for you.

How did you check the relay? Is there anything that you could have done during the motor pull. Did you do any other work on the car while the motor was out that could be a reason for the no start?

Most likely you didn't connect the starter solenoid signal wire. It's a black female spade connector.

have you tried jumping the solenoid off the battery?

if you have a crimp on spade connector laying around that is the right size, crimp it on a piece of wire.
take the black one off the starter and stick on the one you just crimped. then you can touch the other end of the wire to the positive (+) battery terminal. if your starter is good it will crank over

i tried jumping it last night and it’s didn’t crank I think I’m having grounding problem maybe?

I have it connected it’s the black piece that clips in above the negative and positive post on the starter correct?

You could also take the starter out of the vehicle and (bench) test it to make sure it's working correctly. There's lots of YT videos on it.

Check continuity between battery negative and the starter bolt. Then check voltage between battery positive and starter bolt. You should have battery voltage there. If both check out, have someone hold the key in the start position and check for 12v at the starter signal. Also check for power at the wire that bolts to the start. That goes directly to battery positive.

I assume grounds are the same on 1g. If that’s true, there are grounds at the starter bolt off the harness, ground strap from battery to firewall and last one at the back of the intake manifold. Think that’s all the engine grounds.

    Here are my three grounds
    1.)frame to intake manifold
2.)starter to starter bolt on trans
    3.)negative cable to frame
    Does this all look correct?

Also there are three of the same connector one goes to the coil packs and other connected to the same cable as the cam gear sensor idk where the other goes. But idk which one goes to which either :/

Grounds look good but I’d move that one on the throttle cable so it doesn’t interfere with cable operation. If it doesn’t have another mounting point, move it to the top of the bracket rather than under it.

Did you check starter signal? The coil pack connector shouldn’t matter as far as cranking the engine.

You can see the coil pack wire colors in post # 3
