ok guys so this is the deal. was driving home the other night. was in 4th gear going about 40 mph, so fairly low rpms. maintained that speed for a little bit. out of no where i hear the CLUNCK and felt like i ran over something. i was not able to accelerate after that. i dropped into 3rd gear and hit the accelerator and the car didnt move, but the car would rev. dropped it to second gear and the same thing, i could rev as if it was in gear, but no action from the car. i let the cars rpms drop all the way and then the power cut off. now the car wont even turn over, wont even click.

condition of the that night and prior night was lots of rain.

car has 125xxx miles on engine, 165xxx on body.

so my question is if the car, while it was on for that short time, could still enable the clutch, shift into gear, and rev the engine, WHAT THE HECK IS THE PROBLEM??

once again im not sure if something fell off and inspecting the engine and underside i couldnt see anything missing.

ALSO word just in from my buddy, my timing jumped. but would that cause the car no able to accelerate? hes thinking maybe tranny is done. any other words?

Being able to rev the engine without power means that the engine is no more linked to the wheels. Like "400hp93talon" said it could be cv joints. A bad clutch would also make the car feel like that but it probably wouldn't break with a clunking noise like you said. The engine not starting is a different problem though I really doubt those 2 could be related.

Your engine not turning over, not even clicking, sounds like an electrical problem. Even if the timing belt broke/skipped, the starter solenoid would still at least make a clicking sound.

That is true, if the timing belt broke the car would turn over it just wouldn't start. Theres a dust cover on the bottom of the flywheel, I'd pull that off and have a look inside there and see whats going on. I'd like to think its electrical but with the car going into gear and free rev'ing like that and not even trying to start it sounds like a tranny/flywheel mess.

I know of a guy here (420a) that had his starter break apart, motor itself fell under the car and the starter shaft fell into the bellhousing and screwed the pressure-plate. Took a while to notice the starter was gone.

Dang these are all good suspects.....If the timing belt the motor will just free spin with no or little compression. The starter idea is a good one if you cant see anything with the dust cover off pull the starter its only two 14 mm bolts that hold it on. If none of the above are the issue it could be your differintial also!

see im thinking it is the drive shaft. just from where the clunk came from and the way the engine still engaged power, just didnt transfer to wheels...and as for the electrical problem maybe it pulled some wires ont he way out. i didnt get fully under it before towin it. ill update status tom.

Um... Unless the cars AWD you have no driveshaft, and according to the car in your profile its a TSi.

ok well something along those lines....if im making engine power but no powers beiung transfered to the wheels....

Does the clutch pedal feel different?
When you try to start, do you hear the fuel pump come on?
How many clicks do you hear under the dash when trying to start?

Check clutch slave, clutch pedal switch, make sure the front driveshafts haven't slipped out of the trans and then if you didn't find anything pull the valve cover. See how many rockers are kicked and whether the valves are stuck open on those cylinders (they're likely embedded in the piston).

well cars in buddys shop like i said, but on the night it happened, afterwards while i was bring the car to a stop, clutch was perfectly fine, didnt feel any different(i would know if the clutch went out...(went thru a few on my weekend warrior GTI) went in and out of gears with no problem and slave was replaced about 2 months ago so i know its not that. besides that i cant give any more info bc car is not with me to check anything...
will be calling my buddy in a few to see if we have further info.

motor is done. guess its time to part out.

Why not get a motor to put in instead?

Can you atleast tell us W.T.F. happened or what was found?

dont know internal details yet, but he said they turn it on and hear knocking inthe back of the engine. ill see if i can get her open

i mean, what do you guys think. obviously once i have the full situation at hand we can make a better judgement call, but ive spent about 3 grand into fixing this car up since i bought it 5 months ago. its just been thing after thing after thing. was a terrible buy as i can see...but would it be worth it to spend aboth 500-1500 on a new head or block or just the whole thing??

The mistake your making is paying other people to do everything for you. You don't know how? Well just guess how everyone else learned on this site to do it. If you refuse to do this your best option is to sell it.

wtf are you talking about?? im paying no one anything to do anything...my BUDDY has a shop and is not charging me to give me a report of whats going on since i dont have a lift to check it out myself. now that being said ive done three part outs, built a 67 camaro starting with only the shell, and have helped numberous other people with all sorts of "fix-its". i was asking for an opinion on whether to partout, sell or get new engine. i am broke and if i need to replace whole engine(which itll prob only be head or block once i figure out whats exactly broken, but for the purpose of price lets say whole engine) + installing it will prob make a bad dent in the pocket. i mean cars already got 160xxx miles on everything but motor, so i mean ive been slowly replacing everything, but i cant keep dealing with everything on the car breaking. so my question once again is would parting it out be worth it? selling it straight up? or keep, save, get motor, and hope tranny doesnt go out in 4 months....

Why would you part out? Your car is basically stock!

part outs arent just for modded 10 sec cars...ppl need stock parts:banghead:

Honestly, what would you expect with a car from 95 and a car you weren't the first owner of. I would just replace the motor and keep the car, at least at that point you know the engine is good. Then maybe some underbody work and you are good to go for awhile. I guess it all just depends on how much do you love the car when its running?
