Lifted my engine and tranny out today. 97 talon tsi
So I was looking on the engine and im only finding 6 bolts that remove from the transmission to the block and from what I see there is 4 going in towards the block and 2 coming from the other way. do the starter bolts count as one of the bolts? Pretty confused, I know its a 7-bolt though because of how the oil pan is dented in by the crank. Just confused as to where this 7th bolt is.

northernawd is correct. I just wanted to add, when you put the engine and transmission back into your car, make sure there are the two dowel pins in the transmission. These will align your engine and transmission back up correctly and are easy to overlook.

Yes, starter bolts count, they go through the mounting plate. ONce all the bolts are out (including the 12x60mm in the back), you can lightly pry them apart until the transmission is off the dowel pins.

They do not count, the op is trying to find the 7 bolts that make it a "7 bolt". They are not the bolts that mount the engine to the trans. After you remove the trans, remove the clutch and you will find the 7 bolts holding the flywheel to the crank.

Ok so I got the tranny seperated and off, only 6 bolts though, 4 close together longer ones, and the 2 small ones on the back. strange. seems the clutch plate is probably original, its purple with mitsu markings and theres nothing left to it, LOL. Aswell I know about all of the dowell pins. putting the engine back in is the least of my worries right now as how I have to figure out why it doesnt wanna go into first. and gonna do the timing belt and fix some rusted lines and clean clean. I got 10 weeks and the cars in one spot that it can stay for that amount of time. But ya ill attach a picture when i get home later on. cleaning the bell housing now.

Ok here are pics, seems one hole doesnt line up or something 7 holes on tranny but 6 on block, anyways. also pic of my engine bay, very very dirty PEI dirt is red so its not rust mostly dry mudd, some rust but not lots. and thats a beauty of a BMW eh, my dad rents the back of the shop out to the guy its crazy the amount of money and hours he has into it. a beautiful build to say the least.

Or when you take off the 5 bolts for the transfer case, do one of those long suckers count or something?

Top picture. 7 bolts holding the flywheel to the crank. That's what makes it a 7bolt. It has nothing at all to do with the amount of bolts holding the trans to the engine, or xfer case or anything else. Just those 7 bolts on the flywheel

I may be wrong but trying to clear things up since the OP's first post is confusing.

My guess, is he thinks that a 7 bolt motor has 7 bolts holding the transmission in place to the motor instead of the flywheel/crank being held by 7 bolts.

Yes, but the correct info was given in the 1st reply, then in the 7th, 9th & 10th posts

yeah, my bad I thought it was the bolts holding the bell housing to the engine block, not the bolts on the fly wheel to the crank. dont know how i managed to mix that all up
