I just recently finished my rebuild on my 420a. Forged JE 8:8:1 pistons, Eagle H-Beam rods, Crane 0016 cams, 1mm over sized valves. I had about 3/4 tank of gas left and it sat in there for almost 2 years so I put fuel stabilizer and sea-foam. When I tried o start it, it won't crank up unless I'm at WOT then when it goes on I have to hold the throttle open to hold 2k RPM or it will stall. Even at 2K RPM it sputters horribly, and black smoke is coming out the exhaust and it doesn't stop. It backfires as well. I checked my TPS and it was bad but I havent replaced it yet. Could the TPS cause all those problems. Maybe the FPR. Any ideas would help. I've searched and got great info but wanted to see what everyone else thinks. Thanks guys.

My first question is, is this the first time you started it since the rebuild? if so your timing could be off. Very possible you have bad gas, despite the stabilizer, and you may of fouled your spark plugs by trying to start it with the sea foam and bad gas etc. Just some idea's i can think of off the top of my head. I'd start small though and replace your tps, although i doubt that is causing all these problems.

:thumb: +1 all the way.

Whats up fellas, sorry to reply to such an old thread but it was about the same issue and I just recently returned from Iraq. Anyway, I was wondering because I replaced the stock cams with medium cams, when I did the timing, was I supposed to advance or retard the timing? I now have Crane 0016 Medium cams. By the way I haven't replaced the TPS yet.

Neither, leave it dead on. Do not play with cam timing until you get adjustable timing gears, and then only do it via dyno.

OK I will leave it then. I already have adjustable Cam gears, I just hope I could find a reliable dyno shop in Washington State preferably near Everett or Marysvillle. Anyone has any ideas?

if you come to NW ohio, I can help you, but otherwise no :p. I think English Racing is from Washington, but i may be wrong and have no idea how far away that is from you, but they do have the fastest awd auto dsm, granted 4g63.

Out of curiosity (surprised i didn't ask/catch this before) do you plan on turbocharging in the future? Just curious because you went lower than stock comp.

Some other things I thought of, did you ever change the gas? When you try to crank it normally, does it attempt to turnover? When is the last time you changed your fuel filter, or done regular tune-up maintenance (spark plugs/wires etc). Especially after the sea-foam. Sea-foam is for cleaning out a dirty engine, and like i said before it can make a mess on its way out (via oil and plugs) probably wasn't the best idea to add that to possibly bad fuel. I guess it could also be possible your cat is plugged, but I have never herd of an issue this bad with just a clogged cat.

Just some things that came to my mind, and some stuff for you to check,

Yes I do plan on turbocharging in the future just saving up cause it could be pricey. When I turn the it does turn over just doesn't start. I'll be able to start crank it up again on the 20th. When I do I'll update on whats happening. Thanks for the help.

There are a lot of 2wd dyno's in tacoma. Just do a google search and you'll see them pop up.
