engine revs up to rev limiter, not on gas?

i cleaned out my intercooler today, and cleaned under my engine with engine degreaser, and whewn i took her for a ride bout 10 mins after i drove it i floored it and i put it in neutral and it just revs all the way to the rev limiter unless i stick it in a lower gear it will stop, and if i start it up and give it gas it will do the same thing, wtf is wrong with my car? :thumbdown nothin but trouble from my dsm

its a 5spd, and i used gas, thats what vfaq said to use

Your clutch might be slipping

when you Step on the gas does the RPM's just shoot up without you really going anywhere until maybe a couple seconds when speed finally catches up?

if so thats your clutch going

no its not the clutch, but i noticed that there is a hard spot in the pedal, usually it is easy to push, but now u actually have to push it in kinda hard bout half throttle, and if u go past half throttle then thats when the engine will go to the rev limiter, and it will do it when its in neutral and u just push the gas past half throttle or past the "hard spot"

Throttle Position Sensor can cause that.

Oh, , this happened to my 90....

Your throttle cable is off its track. Just look at the cable, there's a 'notch' it has to fit where it connects to the throttle body. Just slip it back into the notch and you're good to go.

The first time this happened to me, I was like "WTF?!"

Good point, a stuck throttle cable WILL do that!

found my problem, knew it wasnt the throttle cable b/c didnt do it when the engine was off but figured somthing with the throttle plate making it stick, took my tb off and found a rubber peice that david brode uses with his ucip that goes on the ic for like a lil connector so u dont have to use a clamp? so i guess it just sucked it right off and tried to go into the engine, so i just removed the rubber peice and used a clamp

I figured it was probably something sticking the throttle open, that happened on my 92 tsi once when a mechanic dropped a bolt into the intake, heh. You and I are just lucky that it _did_ get stuck, otherwise... blammo.
