Hey all DSMers, I have a 2g with the 7bolt that I'm starting as a project. The kid i bought it off of told me he had the head replaced and the block bored. My question is when i pull off the head, what do i need to look for? I'm not in a hurry to build it, I just want to do things right. The engine is out of the car right now, the head bolts are torqued down. I also heard that i should go with the L19 head studs and just a metal gasket, or should i go with the cheaper ARP's and and cometic head gasket. all the info i get would be great. I have been a lover of dsm's for a long time, but just now able to do a build. So let me know the steps I need to take to make my talon a sweet VTEC Killer. Thank you all Jeff

waddup....first off dont believe what any1 ever tells you about an engine unless they can prove it hahaha......When u pull head off look for dents in the top of the piston that would indicate valves hitting it, look for grooves on the cylinder wall, and check the surfaces with a straight edge and feeler gauges to see if they are warped at all. But dont do that yet.....do a leakdown test or compression test b4 u take apart engine and that will indicate a internal problem..... i use arp's and cometic gasket.......i would do a complete rebuild if i was u its not that expensive for a stock rebuild. I can message you on how to do a complete stock rebuild for around $800..

Thank you, like I said I need all the help I can get. This car is my baby, and i want to do things right. So i have the engine on blocks right now (I dont have an engine stand) with out the oil pan on it would i still be able to do a leak down test and compression test?

your welcome......yea mine is my baby too thats why you should just rebuild the thing while engine is out instead of running into problems in 6 months or something ya know.....you will be able to do perform a leakdown test but you are suppose to do them with the engine at operating temperature..engine is cold the clearances are bigger. You should still be able to detect any major problems just expect slightly lower readings ### its cold. but you wont be able to do compression test with engine out of car.

like just mentioned you gata set your goals first you may be able to build you stock engine for 800 but honestly if you build it "better" way your looking at lets say 1500

i recently build a motor for my dsm and decided it was better to build it for stronger set up instead of oem.

in the end i did the math and and i only ended up paying 500 more for a fully build 6bolt/2g head hybrid everything brand new only thing i had used was the block and oil filter housing. i scored those for about 60.00 of craigslist :thumb:

my built:
272 delta regrinds
stg1 dsmgraveyard head
cometic h/g arp studs
evo9 pistons w/.020 over / graveyard rings
1g crank / rods
b/s delete
new water pump oil pump clutch and fly kit
aem gears 20.00 at pik n pull:tease:
new seals/ studs/ belt/ timing kit.

hunt down parts you know you can buy used to safe money and shop around like on the classifieds for internals
modern automotive performance
dsmgraveyard.com
autoparts.com

where my sources for my build and local craigslist of course

just a suggestion while the engine is out why not go 6bolt?
buy a used block you safe money on the rods and possibly the crank if its in good shape.

Ya this is SOOOO true!
This is the pistons on the car i just bought.
I was supposed to be able to put a head on it and drive it............
Until i got home and got a closer look.

Oh ya, at least i found the head of the valve that came off the second head that dropped valves.
See it?

Thank you all, you have been helpful. When is warms up a little, im going to pull the head and see what the pistons and valves look like on it. I was told if i want to keep the car around 300hp the 7 bolt would do ok. It all depends on if everything checks out, if it doesnt then i may look for a 6 bolt. I recently scored on some parts from another 95 talon, my buddy gave me alot of parts for a case of beer, LOL think i did well. So im closer to getting all the parts i need to put together the engine, also i have a 2g intake manifold but no throttle body. i have heard to go with a 1g, whats your thoughts, let me know?

I will get some pics on here soon
