Well that time has come for me to start ripping in down and apart.

I plan on reringing my engine in 6 - 8 weeks so i need to start getting tools and parts now.

SO my ? is

what tools will i need to

take the head off
drop the oil pan
get the pistons out
do the rings
ect......

details please LOTS AND LOTS of details

and prices if you can

thanks

Just to be curious, are you just going to be replacing the piston rings or will you be replacing the pistons also? It all really depends on the condition of the cylinder walls before you can get a good idea of how much work / down time / cost there will be.

But to answer your original question, there are not 'that many' special tools you will need. Obviously you will need basic hand tools (sockets, wrenches), a piston ring compressor, a set of gauges to measure your piston ring gap, a file, and any special tools you will need to do your t-belt. If you have not replaced your t-belt yourself, I would take a look at the at the vfaq to give you an idea of what you will need.

Yeah, you wil need a torque wrench for the head bolts and the rod caps. Sorry, I just kind of classified that under basic hand tools:).

You should look into purchasing the DSM cd, that will give you a better idea of what you will need to do to the engine once you are ready to reinstall everything.

a brain... (sears 4.99 yours may be defective), full socket set, full box end wrench set (ratcheting are nice!), 8, 10, 12, 14 & 17mm everything, impact gun, hammer, jack and jack stand's, racheting torque wrench, ring compressor, glove's, 32mm socket for axel nut's, hmm.. oil catch pan.. im thinking thats it.. maybe

First of all, call the parts house and get a complete overhaul kit. That takes care of the parts. Price a timing belt kit, complete. Autotensioner and water pump etc. They can call you back and give you the prices and availibility.

Call a machine shop and have them figure up a head job. You can use the valve seals you will get in the kit.

Figure new plugs and wires, hoses, belts, and how much to flush or replace your radiator if it won't flush.

You may want to consider an over size if the engine has more wear than you can get by with by re-ringing.

There again, contact a machine shop and get those prices. If you are serious, a new set of mains and rod bearings would be in order.

Machine shop again.

Now the tools. Good ratchet and extensions. Foot pound torque wrench. Allen sockets for head bolts. Plasti gauge if you are doing your own bottom end. Various wrenches for the bolts you can't get sockets on. Screw drivers, etc.

Most can be had by getting a good kit from Craftsman. And if you add the torque wrench, you should be ok.

VFAQ and adhere to it to the letter.

A bunch of other things I can't think of right now. Others can add.

Good LUck

how much do you think i will end up spending in tools

and i really only plan on doin the rings because the engine/car only has 60k miles on it so the head and everything is fine

Having just done this not to long ago. You will need the basic stuff as listed above(execpt a 32mm socket for the axles because you can do this in the car). and one more thing a cylinder hone to hone the bores. Oh yea and a set of feeler gauges. Go ahead and get a timing kit while your at it.

Pull the oil pan (drain oil first):sneaky: (10mm bolts)
pull the head (12mm 12pt socket on a 7 bolt anyway)
Pull the pistons mark them as to where they go.(12mm nuts to take rod caps off)
Hone the bores (rent a hone at autozone)
clean bores and bottom of block really good (very important step)
check gap of new rings (another of those important things) - feeler gauges
install pistons back in the holes they came from - (ring compressor)

If the rod bearings are in good shape you can reuse them just make sure they go back in the same spot.

Reinstall everything using porper torque specs

Drive away happy.

Sounds alot easier than it is. But the timing belt is about the hardest part of the whole thing. Good luck
