hey,

is it easier to pull the pistons from the top or bottom of the engine?

looking at buyin a car and wondering if the mech. should do it for $150 + head gasket price and head studs or if I should just bring it to me and do it myself :)

You can only pull the pistons out from the top. There are oil squirters underneath the piston skirt that prevent you from pulling them through the bottom.

Is he charging $150 to just pull the pistons? If the head is already off, all you need to do is rip off the oil pan and undo the rod bolts. Then use a ridge reamer on the tops of the cylinder and push the pistons out of the bore. You should re-hone your cylinders as well if you are re-ringing the pistons. Its not all that hard if its apart.

Nah, the car is all together know...but his mech. friend will charge $150 to change out hte pistons and rings...the seller is throwing in the piston/rings. I just needa pay for the headgasket/studs. Not a bad deal...

Which leads me to another question. The car is pretty cheap (between 2K and 3K) and has a Big 16G clipped...3.5" exhuast ,eprom ecu w/ data logger cable hooked up autometer air/fuel and boost pillar gauges, adjustable kyb agx shocks w/eibach pro-kit
-built head(new valves, springs and 1mm oversized valves, ported and polished) STAGE 2 Specs, -walbro 255lph fuel pump

Here is the problem:
I am selling this car as is. The only problem with the car that i know of is it has bad rings. I am including a set of Nippon Racing forged pistons with new rings also so that the car can be fixed the right way, I can have the pistons installed locally for cheap if buyer wants to pay.

Will this setup be okay on the stock injectors @ a low PSI or should 550s be installed right awaY?

I'd run a dry and wet compression test on it to make sure the problem is in the rings. Im' assuming this is a 1g...how many miles are on it? Chances are it hasn't been babied with all the upgrades on it. If it just turns out to be the rings, and you can have them changed for $150...I'd say its pretty good. Once you get the pistons/rods out and you can inspect the bearings, you'll know more the condition of the motor...unfortunately at that time you will me more than likely committed to buy it. BTW that head sounds pretty good...probably a good chunk of cash in that if worse comes to worst.

Ah, well I am kinda sketched out by the whole deal. I really want it, but something doenst seem right. What else could it be? The rings or the headgasket? I dont wanna drive out 3 hours each way for tihs car only for it to not be worth it :(

There is one in town I put $200 down on..91 TSI AWD with new head...it seems a lil beat up..It costs 2.5K but its local to me...may be better..

I havent had the chance to do a compression test on the one in town..but he said he rebuilt the head 10k miles ago when the timing belt snapped and he replaced the headgasket. The motor didnt knock or make any nosies..didnt overheat as far as I saw and it rev'ved smoothly.. butthe car didnt seem that fast. It is the only DSM I've ever driven though...Think if the compression checks out a 174K mile 91 AWD is a good buy for 2.5k? The paint isnt terrible, but not great..a dent on the panel where it says "TSI AWD 16V" that is shallow....it had a lil white smoke when the car was idling (dunno about when i was driving) but he said the turbo is on its way out (orginal turbo on a 174K mile car!) Think that seems good if the compression checks out?

Thanks and GORGEOUS car man!
