All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

I have the same problem. I hear the tapping sometimes, and sometimes you cant hear anything. It's more than likely a lifter, in that case not a serious threat you should be fine. I would recommend within the next couple months, having the lifters replaced and if you dont plan on rebuilding the motor you might as well go ahead and have new valves seated too. maybe 150 bucks more but worth it.

Condenser or Compressor...?

Take a vac hose of suitable length, put one end to your ear and use the other end to trace the sound... (poor mans stethoscope)

Yes I did. after checking all major things that I thought were the problem I had a little more idea were the problem was coming from so i took the engine/ trans out to find this......

So I have a realley loud ticking noise coming from my intake cam gear area.I automaticaly thought that it was a thrown rod bearing. But my buddy came over who is an experianced dsm mechanic thinks it is in the head he says he has never heard a rod knock like that.So i am hoping for the best not a rod that is.Does anybody have any ideas for me before I tare this motor apart. Also the noise is realley loud and goes away over 2700rpm's.

Thanks for the heads up I just looked at the lifters they looked o.k. . They move side to side a little i think that is normal though. Can a bad timing belt tensioner make a loud slapping sound .

if it were a timing belt tensioner it would be very obvious. my timing belt tensioner came loose and the belt was barely intact and obviously loose. although it did make alot of noise due to the valves tapping the pistons.

I had a similar problem before, and found out that the stock intake cam gear was slightly bent. I could see it rotating in an oval rather than perfect circle when I looked at both intake and exhaust turning. This is also assuming that you are still using the stock gears. By the way does calm down or go away after the car reaches temperature, ### mine did that.

I had a tensioner that the little rod that pushes on the tensioner pulley broke and it make an awful smacking sound. The pulley bracket would smack the tensioner.

Might want to check out the lifters I have heard the same noise before. Possibly a stuck lifter.

I would have to agree about the lifters, you cant tell a bad lifter by looking at it you just have to replace it and its a good idea to replace all of them. I had three or four ticking away, little bit of work but worth the peace and quite.

Thanks for all the responce but it was the tensioner rod. No hydraulic fluid left It was slapping on the pivot it pushes on. Thanks alot guys:thumb:

damn man what happen? I know the feeling car has been sitting for year and half. Just got on the road. Went down the road and hit a rock destroyed the right side rims broke my hid. Might be more damage not sure.

I'd say a pickup judging by the size and height of the tire marks. Either didn't stay in lane or wanted to merge/cut but didn't see the car and just went right into the side.

It was a 2006 Jeep Liberty from New York. The 17 Year old girls daddy paid for it. She tried merging into the lane I was in when I was next to her. Almost no damage to her suv though. I hate stupid people. Look before you merge!!!!!!!!!
