Hi everyone I'm new here don't let me name fool you this is what I use for everything being that I own a honda prelude. I am actually posting this for my technically inclined brother and me knowing very little about these cars I need some info. Lets me start with my brother bought a 93 eagle talon turbo awd about 2 weeks ago, for 800 dollars 120k on the motor, it ran good just needed a tune up, and some body work. I told him to change all the fluids and check every thing before driving, being the way he is he dosn't, Taking the car to work the oil pressure dropped and the engine started knocking. I assume engine bearings. They towed it home. When i listen to the motor at idle its quite and smooth run when you rev it to about 2.5 3k it starts to rattle and shake. My dad told me when he looked at the prev owner didn't tighten the oil filter and it came loose blowing all the oil out. My bro said the car ran on the hwy for around 20 sec. I have a feeling having herd the sound before that he spun a bearing. I wanted others opinions on if you think it can be fixed. I have been working with honda motors for a great while now so I know my way around a motor. I need to know where I can order new bearings for this engine. I am willing to fix it however my bro dosn't like the idea, I told him if all I have to do is replace the bearings things would be good as new. I do realize that the rest of the engine may have susstaned damage from this result as well. Or sould we just sell the car part it or scrap the thing. Which I myself would hate to do this car has potental. He just dosn't want to screw with anything. Also is there any writeups for this process. Thanks everyone.

You are on the right Trail Prelude Man :thumb: - My guess is Bad Balance Shaft bearings & wounded Rod bearings all due to the infamous crushed Water to Oil Cooler that let the Oil Filter gasket spit out - MANY threads on all this...

Upon reading about the balance shaft bearings I have read that its more of a rapped thump noise along with vibration, rather than a knock. This is more what we are experiencing, I assume rod knock would accure all the time even at idle and without much if any vibration. If it is this then it seems a balance eliminator kit could fix us up. What does every one think.

We pulled apart the motor this past weekend, the rod bearings have sustained minor damage, one more than the others the crank still looks to be in perfect condition, we are going to plastigage and replave all the rod bearings, however there is a pile of metel in the oil pan, turns out the front balance shaft seazed up after the bearing went and the b belt blew off luckly it didn;t get the timing belt, any sugestions on the removal and replacement of the balance shafts? we have the entire front of the motor off and it looks like we have enough room to lower the enging to get the shaft out though the wheel area. The engine looks like its savable.

Yes, you can remove the balance shafts with the engine in the car, if that's what you're asking, just lower the t-belt side until you can get them out. Don't forget your BS eliminator kit, and install the new BS bearings so that they block the oiling holes for the shafts. About the oil cooler, if it's smashed you need to get a new one. If the big bolt (hollow threaded mount for the filter) came loose, just get a 24mm deep socket and torque it properly to spec.

Good luck,

Ryan

WE got both shafts out the front on driven by the belt was toast if spun the bearing and actually melted it to the shaft with some pounding we got it out. Question is I know it sounds strange I would like to know if there is anywhere that we can just buy a new shaft to replace the old worn one, the rear one by the oil pump looks good. Or does anyone need to sell one of theres they removed. Also I have been looking for a site that sells replacement engine parts for cheap we need new rod bearings new bearings for the balence shafts and a new front balence shaft. I have looked everywhere and anyone I talk to dosn't know what one is. Help me please.

Is there any reason you don't want to just do a $50 balance shaft eliminator kit and never have to worry about it again?

Ryan

Being my brothers car my dad just wants to replace it, he feels funny removing parts and adding something like that in its place, If it was my car I would otherwise, I personally don't have a problem with doing so.

Mirage Oil Pump Shaft P/N MD 098626 - $18 - don't forget the Loctite.

Tell Dad I said he needs to do some research or plan on becoming a Full Time Mitsu Mechanic - I know - I AM a dad of a 20 year old with a Mitsu... OMG

I got him convinced finally to do the removal of the shafts after spending so long looking and finding nothing, I ordered the removal kit found for 42 and some 6 bolt rod bearings just hope there the right ones I couldn't remember if the oil pan looked like the 6 or 7 bolt. Hope to get more done to it this weekend.
