Alright guys,
I have a 99gs eclipse n/t. It has been sitting for 1 1/2yrs. Finally got it to crank due to a bad fuel pump. I would assume that most or all of the pumps are bad. Now i am hearing a squel which probably is the water pump.? There is also a knocking that sounded like a rod bearing, but i am wondering if there could be a bad bearing in the water pump making the noise. My radiator resevoir boiled over and my gauge started reading hot but only after running for approx. 5-10minutes. Can water pumps make a knocking noise? I want to know before i tear into the engine on saturday. Could there be other pumps or problems that could make a knocking noise. Its almost a rattling noise w/ a knock i will try to upload a video soon. How do you test the water pump, It should work but maybe a bearing is bad?????

Water pumps are very simple pumps and I doubt that is your problem. Is it more of a tick, or more of a knock.

It could be your lifters. I assume you put new oil in it.

Also a compression test would be a good idea, maybe your head gasket is shot, which caused the overheating?

With a car sitting that long it could be a lot of stuff rattling you might never think of also, like the exhaust or a loose bolt, etc.

i agree on it could be alot of things. I've never touched a water pump, but blacklabelbroth is helping me through this ordeal and he redone his pump and timing belt. I will check what you said and see. I have heard that the squel is the water pump so maybe that needs to be changed but isnt the source of the clicking. Like i said it is a weird noise so i will have to upload a video.

If it is the water pump your car should be over heating. If your car is M/T, try disengaging the clutch. My TOB is going bad, and is making a ticking noise. When I hold the clutch pedal in the ticking goes away.

Good Luck

My car is overheating, and the resevoir is to the point of boiling after a while of running. I drained the radiator fluid and replaced it. When filling the radiator back up i found a small leak without cranking the car. It was dripping down to the oil pan so i assume "dont like to assume" its the water pump leaking. ????????

Wondering if a bad tensioner could make the same sounds. I replaced the tensioners and they were bad... I mean real bad you could barely turn them with your hands and you could feel them grinding
