engine issues, what to do?

Hey, long story short i bought a 91 eagle talon... 4g63t, engine is blowing white smoke when i gas the car, builds boost nice, thought it was oil so i flushed the intercooler and issue still consists, cylinder 1 and 4 are gone said the garage... got a quote from a garage in TO for a engine rebuild and installation, $2500 for rebuild and $1500 for installation.. to much for me thats 4000 total, can else can i do? im thinking or buying a new engine and paying 1500 for installation... thoughts?

Well idk how mechanic friendly you are but if this car is not your daily driver you could throw it on jackstands and fix it yourself. I'd purchase a new short block either stock or modified with forged internals. It all depends on what your trying to accomplish. Then with a new short block you won't have to worry about measuring for clearances because it will all be bolted up ready to drop in. Then I would disassemble the head, inspect and clean it up, get oil port mod #1 done, and reassemble. In the end you will only need to bolt the head down and do a timing belt job and basically have a fresh motor to have some fun with. The reason I suggest buying the short block preassembled is #1 it is going to be cheaper and #2 you really do not want to measure for all the clearances on your first rebuild unless you do a lot of research first. If you are considering doing the work yourself then check out this youtube channel. It will give you an idea of whats needed for a rebuild.

1500 for install???!!! screw that. Spend 200 bucks and get yourself a cherry picker. Its real easy to remove and install these engines.

I had a local shop rebuild my buddy's 6 bolt with a stock rebuild on the bottom end and it only came up to about $750 for the motor. That being said we pulled the motor and took it into the shop, I'm not sure of this is your daily like Somebody else said, but if have the time you will probably spend 1/3 the price of what a garage is going to charge you to do it, and that's after you buy the tools to do the swap anyways
