Hey Everyone,

Finally had time to pull my motor this week. Took about 2.5 hours, which I think is AWESOME for a first timer. Suprisingly straight forward. Anyway, I am trying to do my build right, and I want to take advantage of having the engine out to replace stuff that would normally be very hard to do while the engine is in the car. Any suggestions on things to replace or do while the engine is out? The engine itself will head to the machine shop for rebuild (forged bottom end). Also, anybody have good recommendations for cleaning the bay of grease and grime?

Secondly, while I prep the car for the turbo, I have a few questions about it.

1 - I dont have access to E85, Race Fuel, or 93 Octane pump gas. With 420A's and 91 Octane(Which is the best I can get where I live), is there a suggestion on max PSI with that type of gas?

2 - With timing, I know you really have to start messing with Timing at 15lbs, but is it recommended to adjust timing before you get to that point? I dont want this car to just "work", I want it to work correctly and still be as reliable as possible.

3 - I am trying to find a turbo that is about on par with a 16G that has a T3 flange. I dont want a T3/T4 hybrid but I think a straight T3 might fit the bill. Not looking for crazy power or to max its potential out. Just something that spools quick, is moderately priced(I am not buying an Ebay turbo), and can be run reliably. I dont have a particular HP number or anything I am shooting for. This will NOT be a track car/Drag car/race car. This will be a commuter car with mostly highway/freeway driving. I plan to run between 12-15lbs (depending on what the answers are for the first 2 questions).

Thanks in advance for everyones help!

Standard Engine Brite works well.

Maximum boost pressure is a function of the specific turbo you choose, ignition timing, fuel octane, etc. I'd recommend using a full stand-alone EMS that can do ignition timing as soon as you can afford it.

It sounds like a standard Garrett T3 will suit you fine. Hahn makes (or made?) a modified 16G turbo with a T3 exhaust flange. They call it the "Super 16G"--that might be another option. There are a lot of articles out there on reading compressor maps and choosing a turbo. I'd suggest doing some more research in order to find the perfect turbo for your goals.

if you would like some ideas you can look through my build thread, though the engine im building is heavily modified though.

for engine parts i would suggest stronger forged pistons and rods for a turbo set up. another small suggestion would be to use some good engine bearings for your rods and mains like cleveite and or acl bearings (tri metal bearings i have found to work best for me, just make sure your oil clearances are acceptable).

heres the link to my build journal, please excuse some of the b.s. stuff.

For cleaning grease i highly recommend purple power, it is hands down the best off the shelf cleaner out there. Just make sure that you don't let it dry on the paint because it will dull the paint.

Perfect! The Super 16G is exactly what I was after. I will do some reading on it of course, but that should be perfect.

Yea, I am absolutely doing forged pistons/rods. I had planned on ACL bearings, but am open to suggestions.

Awesome. Is this stuff available at the local walmart/autozone/O'Reilly's ?

Yes sir, you can get it at just about any parts store, walmart, and hardware stores. They sell it in a spray bottle, a gallon jug, and a 2.5 gallon jug. I would buy the 2.5 gallon jug and a few cheap spray bottles. You will want to dilute it with water a little. I usually use about 70 percent cleaner and 30 percent water. My process is to spray it on, and than take a nylon bristle brush and scrub it until the grease loosens up, than spray it down with a hose. It is a good idea to wear some nitrile gloves, it will irritate your skin. Here are a few pics of some things that i have cleaned just to give you an idea how strong this stuff is.

Wow, that stuff looks like it works REALLY well. I will definitely be getting some. Thanks for the tip!
