Last night i was coming home from my friends when my car started making a weird noise. It's tough to explain but it sounded like a rattle/grinding noise that seemed to be coming from where the belts are. Anyway, i was coming home when all of the sudden the car died and i lost power steering and all my instrument lights went on but i was still able to drive. It's odd though because the turbo was still boosting to its potential and the car still seemed to have its usual pickup which leads me to believe perhaps its not the engine. I know its not the head it was recently rebuilt and has been running perfect which is why this is so weird. Any help would be appreciated i know its kind of a vague description but im gonna be taking a look at things today. Thanks again guys :dsm:

You can start by explaining how the car dies but still was driving and boosting with normal pickup.

I think he meant that the car was boosting fine right before it died indicating that it was not turbo or engine related like he stated.

Mine made similar noises right after my crank pulley decided to break in two. It's fairly common on these motors. It can cause belts to fall off explaining your loss of power steering, although the motor shutting down also explains that.

I would check your crank pulley. They are about $150 from the dealer and pretty straight forward to replace. If that is what happened I recommend replacing all accessory belts at the same time in case they were slightly torn during the break.

^^^^yes same happened to me, it made a weird rattling clunking noise b/c the vibration dapener on the pulley was messed up. Mine didn't break though b/c I caught it in time and replaced it.

I'm thinking its the crank pulley as well but would that explain how the engine was still on and car being abel to drive? It was odd i can still drive it and hit full boost i just have no power steering and a god awful noise which seems to be coming from the crank pulley area. Thanks :dsm:

Wait so..is that a yes I would be able to continue driving just with no power steering and my instrument gauge lit up if it was the crank pulley? Or would the car just not move at all. Thanks
