Ok so I plan on rebuilding my motor. I've got 2 blocks, my original and new. This rebuild is not for racing or high horse. Just normal daily car. My question is do I have to get oversize bearings and grind the crank journals if there is not any damage? Does the crank need to be grinded and polished no matter what? I read here that if there are no scores on the journal then you could just replace bearings with stardards and it will be ok. My motor is around 140K miles. It is out now with out the head. Just the block. I can spin the crank easily by hand. Crank spins freely. I'm guess this is pretty good then. My new block was very hard to crank. It is by itself as well. I found that the bearings were pretty scoured and smashed. Crank jounals had some scouring.

The condition of the crank is best trusted to your machine shop. Unless you have the tools to measure it.

Usually if no real damage happened to your engine, the crank will just need to be polished or turned.

Either way if it requires to be cutt... find a new crank or a good condition used one and use STD size bearings.

If you take it to any machine shop w/ a spec sheet, they will tell you what you need to do.

So taking it down .01 is not a good idea and is it better to try to stay STD? I know they do sell .01 to .02 sizes. So wouldn't that mean that it can go down a size?

Do shops know the stock sizes of all cranks? If they measured a crank from any car, would they know that it's been cut a size down or that it's still stock size?
