So looking over my tranny as its out of my car i noticed a small hole in the top of the transmission and i can smell gear oil through it. I took an air gun and blew air into the hole and it blew out the rag i had sitting in the drivers side axle seal opening.

My question is, was there something that i took out of the hole when i was removing my tranny that i simply forgot about? or is there something that is completely missing such as a bolt? Here is a pic

I believe that is the vent for the trans. Of the 20-30 transmissions that I have pulled out of these vehicles, I have never seen anything in that hole. I could be wrong though. at least my wife always thinks so. LOL.

I thought it might be too, but it seems strange that they would devise those 2 rubber vents for the bell housing to keep dirt etc from going into the housing, and then just leave a simple hole in the transmission instead of another rubber "boot" vent to keep foreign materials out.

I have to agree with you, I've just never seen any sort of plug in that hole. I'll have to check more on this tomorrow.
