cant afr's be calculated or at least closely approximated off of egt readings??

Not at all.. EGT's vary greatly depending on various factors. EGT's are pretty much extra insurance to make sure you're not destroying your engine.

Most people I know use their EGT gauge as a fuel economy device. When its hot you're working the turbo and using fuel, and when its cold you're not. Keep in mind I work for a transport company. We also use the boost gauge the same way. Like everyone else said though on a tubo engine its cheap insurance. On a two stroke its a tuning device.
