so i took my car up the block a day ago and was reving it up to about 4000-5000 rpm when i was driving then the car would start jerking really really badly like it would slow down and accerate very fast but like over and over. i dont know if its my gas. i think it becuase my gas is over 2 months old in my tank. because i havent driven it much yet. which really sucks because its my only car. anyways i was wondering if the bad gas would cause my car to jerk like that and not be able to rev over like 5000 rpm..... about a week ago it did fine revving high. my car also dies after the engine is heated up. so im guessing its the gas going very bad.

Hey guys,

I just installed my new rebuilt motor and am ready to fire it up. The gas in my tank has been there for two and a half years. Can I just pour some new gas in to mix with the old and start the car or should I drain the tank? If I need to drain it. What would be the best way to do that? I did rewire my fuel pump with 10 guage wire and a relay. Should I just turn on the relay, run a hose from the fuel line right before the fuel rail to a gas can and use the pump to drain the tank?

Best regards,

Tanner

Don't DO it!!!
:nono:
You just spent x amount of dollars and possibly 2 1/2 years rebuilding a motor and now you want to throw some diluted condensation filled gas that probably has a 80 octane rating into a turbo motor?

Seriously, gas starts to breakdown after a few months. Even if you add the winter stuff to it, it might be good for 6-9 months.

If it was a gallon, I'd say maybe, but if the tank is half full, adding half a tank might be risky.

If it were me, if there is no easy way to drain it from the tank, I'd just take the fuel filter off and have the car jacked up and point that hose into a gas can and trun the key on, the pump should run and hopefully gravity will do the rest if the pump shuts off. If not, just keep truning the key on and off. Once it's all out, add another gallon in to flush the system. Then give all that gas to your brother in the honda...

If there is no other way, I would even just drop the tank to get that stuff out.

good luck!

It begins to lose 1 octane piont every month, so its not the smartest thing to try. Do what ^^^ said or siphone(sp?) it out with a hose into a gas can. Then add a little gas straight from the pump and turn the pump on to clear the lines of this old fuel.

I am in the same boat your are. I need to empty my tank tommorow, my gas has been sitting for about 2 years. I got my car running today and it ran like A$$ since the gas was bad, I didnt take out of the drive way but you could tell the gas was bad (hardly running). But I was just happy I got it fixed finally.

I'm just going to syphone it out with a hose into another gas can and find a place to get rid of it.

1 octaine a month!!! Holy crap thats down to about 70 octaine. No way I want to run that on my 9:1 motor. Thanks for the help guys. Rep pionts for everyone! Ohh wait they don't count I'm a newbie!!! Atleast they will count once I become a proven member.

Thanks again,

Tanner

So the cars been parked for about 10 months now while i was doin some mods to it. Hasn't been run at all and i just realized the other day that i had a full tank of gas when i parked it. When the time does come to start it back up, i'm gonna have some issues to work out due to my recent mods (MAFT, AFPR...), so i'm wondering if i should start w/ some fresh gas to prevent further issues. Is the gas thats been sitting in the tank for the last 10+ months any good or will it make the car run like shit? Its a full tank, so pumping it all out would be a PITA, is there any other solution to 'revive' the gas thats in there? dry gas mixture? octane booster? Thanks
-Ryan

i would put some dry gas in it and see how it runs. over time the octane level of the fuel may have decreased. since it would be a PITA to drain the fuel... i would see what happens with some dry gas or octane booster.... if it runs like crap then drain it. do you have an a/f ratio gauge?... if it runs lean stay off the throttle until you get new gas. or just drive it easy until you can put new fuel in it.

You'll probably get away with running that gas just fine. Don't try to tune with it, of course. Pour in a bottle of mostly-alcohol gas treatment to chase off any water -which you'll probably have less of than if the tank had been more empty.
When you get to about a half-tank, refill, run that tank all the way out, and then next fill-up you'll be in the clear.

My car has been sitting over a year with a little more than half tank. I put in about 5 gallons of fresh premium, do you suggest the same for me?

I did a motor swap on a 420a and car has been sitting for a year. Now it idles kinda bad and vibrates a little. Could this be because of the old gas if not what symptoms will i see from it. And yes all 4 cylinders are firing and everything and im looking for vacuum leaks right now just curious if old gas will do this.

I tried starting up the car that I've been building since October of 2006. Everything is good on the car and it won't fire up. I pulled the feed line and primed the pump into a clear water bottle, the gas was orange, not yellow like its suppose to be. I am assuming this is why it won't start and the gas is old. Does old gas turn orange? LOL

Anyone with old gas experience? Thought I would double check on here before I drain, pull, then clean the tank.

So its not running yet eh?

Id pull it if you have the extra time. Just for reassurance. I dont see much of a problem just running it as is after you drained it. The old gas hanging on the walls would eventually work it way out.

Glad I cleaned my tank while it was down.

Okay, ive had my 92 talon for 2 and a half years now, and when i got it, it had about half a tank of gas in it. now, 2 years later, its finally reassembled and just refuses to fire. I have a brand new battery and it will just crank and crank, but refuses to start. It will sputter from time to time, but thats about it.
Ive tried spraying starting fluid in the intake, and reconnecting the hoses, but that even doesn't really cause it to start to "almost run." The engine has spark, is properly timed, and other than a few fittings that need to be tightened up, is ready to go.
My real question is, do you guys think that the bad gas would make that much of a difference?

Ive got a fuel filter, which im gonna put on in a couple of days, but i don't know how much of a difference that will make.

I siphoned as much gas as i could out of the tank, and added about 4 gallons of fresh premium, as well as a bottle of heavy duty grade HEET, but that didnt do anything.

I thought i might try completely draining the gas tank, changing the filter, and then fill it back up completely with premium.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
