so i took my car up the block a day ago and was reving it up to about 4000-5000 rpm when i was driving then the car would start jerking really really badly like it would slow down and accerate very fast but like over and over. i dont know if its my gas. i think it becuase my gas is over 2 months old in my tank. because i havent driven it much yet. which really sucks because its my only car. anyways i was wondering if the bad gas would cause my car to jerk like that and not be able to rev over like 5000 rpm..... about a week ago it did fine revving high. my car also dies after the engine is heated up. so im guessing its the gas going very bad.

Are you thinking full removal and spray it clean? cause that sounds like a bit of a job....

I am but sure on this at all but i think that leaving gas in there for too long will eat away at your tank and the gas will turn orange. If the gas you took out was orange you need to clean it out, ive seen another topic about this on here somewhere.

I'd go ahead and pull the tank and clean it out good, blow the lines out good, and change the fuel filter.
Try to get all you can out. If it has been sitting long enough it will "gum" everything up. Leaving it with less than a full tank seems to make it worse for some reason.

okay so i am having a problem getting my car to run. i have spark and good compression across the board but the first time i started it, it ran for like 5mins but now when i go to start it up it turns over and starts up but i have to keep my foot on the gas pedal to keep it running then it will die. Right after that it will start up go to about 2 thousand rpm's then dies. we replaced my old fuel pump and its still doing this. it sat for some time don't know how long but the gas smells old. do you think it could just be old gas. oh yea if you pull off the gas hose on the fuel rail on the drivers side, where all the unused gas goes back to your tank no gas comes out of there. on my buddys it does and his runs. thanks for the help

Hmm, possibly. Although, I started mine and drove it about 10 miles on 5 year old gas (car sat unused for that long) with absolutely no problems whatsoever. I did however top off the tank shortly afterward with fresh Shell 93 octane. Here's a quote from AOL autos that has some technical info about the topic.

Unlike crude oil, gasoline is a highly refined product brewed to a certain chemical composition with very specific characteristics. One characteristic of gas is volatility, a term used to describe how easily and under what conditions the gas vaporizes so it can be efficiently burned in your car's engine.

The most highly volatile components in gasoline also tend to evaporate over time. As they do, the remaining fuel's volatility and ability to combust properly degrades. The less volatile the fuel, the less effectively it burns in your engine. The result is diminished engine performance. Your engine may still start and run, but it probably won't run as well.

The good news is, once the old gas has been consumed and the tank is topped off with fresh fuel, the problem should cure itself. Evaporation of volatile compounds can be limited by making sure the gas cap is secured tightly. For the same reason, be sure all portable gas containers are sealed tightly as well.

Bottom line, it couldn't hurt to put some new gas in there.

how full was the tank? I'd put some 93 or highest in there. heet in case water got in there(i put 2 usally). then with the new gas unhook the fuel hose and squirt it in two a 20oz bottle a few times, but you might not have to if it still runs. also techron or some fuel injector cleaner wouldnt hurt.

No way its "just" gas although that could be compounding the problem. If you're not seeing fuel returning to the tank than I suspect its the regulator. Check fuel pressure and see its off the charts, also check voltage at the injectors to make sure the resistor pack is working. Have the capacitors been replaced in the ecu?
