so i took my car up the block a day ago and was reving it up to about 4000-5000 rpm when i was driving then the car would start jerking really really badly like it would slow down and accerate very fast but like over and over. i dont know if its my gas. i think it becuase my gas is over 2 months old in my tank. because i havent driven it much yet. which really sucks because its my only car. anyways i was wondering if the bad gas would cause my car to jerk like that and not be able to rev over like 5000 rpm..... about a week ago it did fine revving high. my car also dies after the engine is heated up. so im guessing its the gas going very bad.

I finally got to drive my car. First I let it run until it was at half way on the temp guage. I noticed a small leak by the t-stat, but nothong major. I drove it about a mile and it ran fine, then when I went to drive to work it wouldn't go past 5 grand, as I pressed the pedal the rpm's dropped more. after a while it would finally die. once I started it, it began to idle very ruff, almost to the point of dying, about 450-600 rpm's. As I limped home it became better and was running fine, still a major hesitation though. I think I may know the problem, the gas is a year to 2 years old, but could it behave like this??? also I haven't changed the fuel filter..could that be it?? I replaced the plugs when I just did the head swap, and t-belt job. Could the bad gas have caused all this, and would the coolent leak effect anything, and could that gass plug anything up. Also what color is the vac line for the fuel regulator, it's a 1990 gsx manual.

thanks

Derek

ps I'm fixing the coolent leak right now

Its a possibility. Pull your fuel pump and take a look at your filter. Run some fuel injector cleaner in some new/added gas if there isnt that much old gas in the tank already and see what happens. Good luck :dsm:

There is also this stuff called iso heat. It removes water from the fuel which is quite likely in fuel that old.
You can also smell the gas, it will deffinately not smell normal if it has gone bad.
Put in a can of Iso Heat or other water remover, and fuel injector cleaner, then fill up your tank with premium. Personally I don't think I would get real hard on it untill I burnt through most of this tank and filled it up again. You could even do another bottle of injector cleaner and Iso heat on your next tank to blow it out.

Hahaha, these are my favorite threads cause I get to suggest the best thing in the world...

First, definately get the ISO heat and some fuel addidtive, at this point some octane booster would be nice. Just to burn the fuel through. I also would say dont get on it at all untill this old gas is gone.

After all said and done, and you burn alllll that gas out of there and a few bottles of ISO heat and Fuel Injector cleaner.

Here it comes!!!
Go to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto and pick up a bottle of the oh so famous "SEA FOAM" and disconnect a vaccuum hose from the intake and run it into the bottle. You are going to see massive clouds of smoke out of your exhaust. Don't be worried this means your cleaning everything in the motor. Cylinders, valves...etc. It makes the car run brand new everytime you use it. I love this shit

SEAFOAM RULES!

I did smell the gas, and it doesn't have the strong smell regular gas has. Would bad gas cause it to run bad, then ok then bad again?? Also no lights engine lights came on.

Also is it really worth it to use sea foam on a engine with a new head and gasket that has seen maybe 2-3 miles??? Also could someone show me a pick of the fuel pressure solenoid. and what color vac goes on it. I have it as the one closest to the fender and a blue vac line.

also will the gas look different....I'm almost 100% sure the gas has been in there for over 1 year. I plan to take all the old out, change fuel filter, and change out injectors, because they may be clugged up.

I just cant wait to get it to run so I can drive it. 4 months and 2 cars wait is long enough

PS on a good note when it ran ok for maybe a mile I could hear the turbo spool up around 3, but shifted around 3500-4000 as I want to break in the head, which is still ticking. One point I had to rev it to 5000 to keep it running, hope I didn't mess anything up, I'm trying to keep it out of boost as much as possible

PSS does bad gas give the same symptons as running out of gas, because thats what it was like. Also will the car idle with bad gas, because it does, just not that well

thanks Derek

I think water in the gas is more likely to make it lurch like that. If there is less than half a tank I wouldn't drain it. If there is more than half a tank take it down to half. Fill it up with premium put in a can of iso heat, a bottle of octane booster, and a can of injector cleaner. Drive it around nicely for that tank, fill it back up do another bottle of injector cleaner, and iso heat then you should be fine. Changing your fuel filter will be good as well.

OK unless you are extremely lazy, I would drain the gas. I can't believe all this crap I am reading on here. Gasoline manufacturers give there products roughly a 3-6 month life. Your shit is 2 years old an you want to run it into your turbocharged engine. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. drain it and change your fuel filter, but I doubt that is going to fix your revving problem.

Finally got some gas out. It is a yellow brown color, and smells horrible. I can only get about a gallon out, I can't get the hose into the tank, because of the L-bend below. It still has a half a tank, but I think I will get some 93, iso heat, fuel injector cleaner. and baby it, this gas is horrible I wish I could get it out, but not sure how to, If I could pressureize the system I could. I'm using a pump to pump it out. It doesn't work to well,
any ideas

thanks Derek

I've ran bad fuel through an engine before and it had no porblems revving at all. The engine didn't last to long though, because of the fuel. The revving problem could be many different things. I'm not saying that it won't fix the revving problem I'm saying it is unlikely. I would get the fuel out of there and change the fuel filter, then see if the problem persists. If it does look elsewhere. As for draining the fuel, I would drop the tank. It sounds like a bi*** but it's pretty easy. just make sure you have everything disconnected before you drop it. Good luck

That takes way longer than dropping the tank, and I don't think you can get the fuel pump to stay on without the engine running. But I may be wrong

so ive had my motor apart for awhile longer than i planned, im getting worried when i get it running the gas might have gone bad. right now its about 2 months old, is there anything i can do to save it? or should i drain it when i get it running, i hope to have it going in another month or two.

My eclipse was sitting in the garage for about 3+ months and when it started up, sounded really bad but eventually ran much better after a few minutes. The problem, I think, is the separation of the gas. Maybe right before you start, put a bunch of gas in it to give it a little stir, should be quick because it is pretty thin.

I have about a half tank of gas that has been sitting in my tank for about 6 months. I am sure it is bad. How do I go about draining it? Or is it safe to run on low boost levels?

on my buddy's daytona we disconnected one of the lines from the fuel pump, put a bucket under it, and turned the key so the pump came on and drained the gas that way.. took about half an hour or more, but it worked

i wouldnt run that gas through my car...but thats just me.
not sure if 2gs are like 1gs...but 1gs have a drain plug on the bottom of the gas tank which works good for draining it.
either that or the way stated above should work.

I have 7/8 tank of 93 Shell V power left in my car. Its been sitting for almost 2 months with no engine, i heard if you keep the gas dark and cold, it wont degrade as bad or something. Is that true?

Empirical tests out front have shown gas to be good enough for two years. Drive it gently until more is gone, refill with fresh. A nice cruise out to Myrtle Beach would do it, refill in Raleigh.

Six months is nothing.

My Galant has been sitting for about 11 months without running once. I am just finishing my engine swap today and dont know what to do with the gas. THeres probably 1/4 tank in there that has been sitting. I dont really want to drop the tank and empty it. Should I cyphen it out and put new gas in? Or just mix new gas in with the old gas? Just need some quick input. Thanks :dsm:

1g has a drain plug, check your service manual you should have one as well.

Is this a rebuilt engine or une that has been used?

what does that matter?

Some people will say just run it through, some others will say find a way to get it out.
I personally wouldn't run old gas through my car, so id find a way to remove it. As stated, 1gs have a drain, Id check under there first to see if yours does. If not, there is a thread on getting old gas out of a tank, you could search for that, there was a few different ways people accomplished it

You don't have to drop the tank to empty it. Just disconnect your fuel line at the filter and put a bucket in there, and run a wire from the test connector to the battery.

Otherwise if you mix in fresh gas and let it sit awhile, you shouldn't have too many problems after you go through the tank if there isn't too much old gas in there. Take it easy, stay out of boost, etc.
