I have an early '92 1g GSX with a 166262 ECU and I need a new ECU. I was wondering if I have to get an ECU with those numbers? If not, what ECU's will work with my car? Thanks.

Any turbo 1g ecu will work..Just make sure it's not a 90.

Since the OP has a 92, even the 90 ECUs will work if he swaps pins 6 and 14 but the best choice would be another MD166262 since there are more of them than any other version. If he can find an EPROM turbo ecu any will work with the right software installed. Watch out for 94's since all of the cars have the California EGR setup and will throw a CEL in the 92.

is there anyway to check the ecu? or do i buy another and swap them? thanks

The ECU for a 1.8L NT shares the capacitor leaking problems with the rest of the 1G ECUs but watching the action of the CEL is the only visual check without removing the ECU and opening it up.

When you first turn on the ignition the CEL should turn on for 5 seconds and then turn off.

At the diagnostic connector, a good 1G ECU (turbo or non-turbo) without any fault codes should output a repeating equal length on - off voltage between pins 1 and 12, this is the heartbeat signal. If there are faults (because of ECU malfunction or issues with the engine) it will output a string of codes over and over consisting of a number of long pulses for the tens digits and then a number of short pulses for the ones digit followed by the next fault or then repeating if there is only one fault. A major ECU failure can cause the diagnostic output to either be on or off fully.
