Watch out for timing pulled from knock also. Stock o2 sensor is almost always off. I go down to the Camden area every now and then. I'd love to take a look at your setup and see the quality first hand. :)

hahaha, quality. LOL. Yea sure you can come by and see my jacked up ride anytime. At least I keep it clean. The front mount looks mean. Here is a crapy cell pic:

As for knock, I have my factory boost gauge set up as a knocksum gauge from dsmchips. The car is running great right now and its not pulling any timing.

Yea its an ebay kit Greddy style. Im impressed with the couplers, they are 4-ply and hold up well. However, I broke most of the T-bolt clamps it came with. Good thing i had some extra ones laying around.

jusmx141, Do you think if I port my wastegate it will improve my spool up time? It seems like this thing is spooling pretty slow. Its bad enough my car is automatic and doesnt move off the line unless i brake boost. Im just wondering what else i can possibly do to improve spool up.

Cool thread. I dont think porting the wg will have much affect. Get rid of the cat probably will.

Or

Nitrous

or

Water injection helps a bit also.

UPDATE: I have been running the car at 21psi and it really pulls hard. I haven't had a chance to dial it in at 22psi just yet but I plan on doing that this weekend. NO KNOCK. Air temps are steady thanks to the new front mount and the car performs the same way after an hour of commuting as it does when you first start it up. The heatsoak used to really effect the performance after a long drive on the stock sidemount.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Ihave the boost set at 22psi. The car is driving really well. It pulls hard once it spools and it seems like throttle response has improved since I installed the FMIC. So far the turbo is holding up really well. I am going to be pulling the intake off tomorrow to check for shaft play and make sure everything is good.

Porting the wastegate hole won't increase spool time.

The thing to do is make sure the adjustable wastegate actuator is fully tensioning the flapper; if the flapper is hanging open a little, it will KILL your spool time.

Do this by popping off the small clip where the actuator arm connects to the flapper lever, and remove the arm from the actuator lever. With the flapper lever in the fully closed position, the hole in the actuator arm should precede the lever by about 1/8" to 1/4"....this means you will have to pull out slightly on the actuator when reinstalling the arm on the flapper lever.

The only other things I can think of that would cause a slow spool is:

- Your car being an automatic, the spool RPM of the turbo is slightly above the stall speed of the torque converter
- The eBay 20G compressor wheel is just THAT much heavier than the one on an MHI 20G, resulting in added lag.

The last example is the case with the 16G that they claim is an "Evo III". Comparing 16G compressor wheels, the MHI Evo III compressor is the lightest, then the MHI Big 16G, THEN the eBay "Evo III 16G". The eBay 16G compressor wheel is literally heavier than the MHI Big 16G's compressor.

UPDATE: My adventure is over. Turbo still works great but I can no longer know how long it will last. A few weeks ago I drove 60 miles to work and when I got there the oil light came on(not good). When I popped the hood I noticed that there was oil gushing out of the oil feed line going into the turbo. When I checked my oil level it was pretty much empty. So basically I starved the turbo of oil for 60 miles. I had no choice but to fill the car up with oil and drive it home. I lost alot of oil on the way home as well. I tightened the oil feed line when I got home, filled the oil properly and test drove the car - no problems. Ever since then the car blows an enormous puff of smoke when I floor it and let off. Took it to Precision Tuning and they told me that the oil seals on the turbo were leaking and that there was in and out shaft play. I asked them how long they thought this turbo would last and they said it could be 6 days, it could be 6 months. It has been several weeks now since the incident and the turbo still spools like it did the first day I got it. It will still hold 22psi all day long. So now I'm playing the waiting game. So much for seeing how long the turbo would last. I am still really surprised it is working today. The puff of smoke is enough to blind the driver behind me for a split second, but other than that it still performs really well. I will let you know how it goes.

I am taking the car to the track this Sunday to see what this thing can do. I wish I could have gone before the turbo was on its way out but that didn't work out. Oh well, I will post time slips Monday.

Whats with the problems with your oil feed lines? This was the 2nd time it came loose right?

Before I bought new rims and tires my stock wheels vibrated pretty bad on the highway. I'm guessing the vibrations might have loosened it and I may not have tightened it down enough. Oh well, my next turbo will be the PTE 3231 54 trim.

Went to the track today. Ran a 13.5 at 99mph. I wasn't able to get past 5500 rpm in 4th gear(AUTO). There was no power left in the turbo. It took 8 seconds to get to full spool at the line but i pulled a 1.8 60'.

What was your total mileage when you started to have this problem with the smoke?

I have a hard time believing that there was no power left in the turbo to get you past 5500rpms.

Did it pull longer with the eBay 20G?
