So the dudes who had my Talon before me had the timing belt on just well enough for me to get to work while driving it before it skipped a few teeth and bent the crap out of (and subsequently broke) the valves.

So I found this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DSM-...620QQitemZ200093382286QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

and I think I've got a line on a cheap junkyard head, or someone who can rebuild this one.

Aside from the crank being scored and the rods being bent, is there anything else I should check/replace while I have it apart that wouldn't come with that kit?

First question, can I pop the pistons out and change the bearings while the engine is in the car? I figured a quick hone with a set of balls or the stones and slap it all together so I can drive it. I'm not planning on this being a 500hp 100k mile viper eating engine, just a few mods over stock AWD snow machine to cart me around for a year or two 'till I'm out of school. I know it will never ever be as good as if a machine shop had done it, I just need it to work for a little while 'till I can do it right.

Second question, anyone use that kit? I sent an email to the guy, it sounds like it's decent quality stuff (especially for $300!).

Final question. Why did they grind the ARP head studs they put in? I'll take pictures when I get home. Thanks in advance!

Why would you buy that? I picked up my kit from a somewhat local mitsu dealer for $282 and its all OEM.

hell, if you want, I could pick one up for you ( I get about 25% discount ) at the same cost and ship it to you. Or go to your local dealer and spend almost the same amount and get the real deal. Dont go Ebay on something so important.

EDIT- I failed to notice it comes with pistons too but again, I would be very careful with anything so important from Ebay

Dude says "The parts are aftermarket suppliers who sell to be re-labled under other brand names. The rings come from hastings, the bearings are clievte, pistons come from the largest aftermarket supplier and the factory is in Argentina. gaskets made in the USA. "

Which, if true, would make sense. Like getting the house brand soda for $0.25 a can instead of $0.75. However, if untrue I might be getting eutectic pistons that will snap @ 10psi. I dunno why you'd even bother ceramic coating a crappy piston for turbo applications though... He's got good feedback, but how many of the people giving the feedback had the engines running when they left it?

Anyways, he left me his phone number, which is a big confidence booster and also says he is in contact with many of his customers machinists, which is also a big confidence booster if true.

They say do it right, do it once, but I plan on doing it now, and once again in the future so if it breaks it won't be a heartache. I just want to know when to expect it to break :D

Any info on in car? Maybe I'll do a writeup and get a free t-shirt!

I would say try it. I am currently debating on whether or not I want to do the same type of cheap rebuild on my engine. I figure that I am not going to be building my FWD into a high horsepower vehicle so its worth a shot. Good luck if you decide to go through with it.

:dsm: I was wondering if anyone has ever tired out and ebay rebuild kit is 325.00 shipped? Can anyone inform me on what the price might be at the stealership? Thanks

internals on ebay = bad idea

Do you know someone whose tried them? Have you tried them yourself? If so, links please, if not, :notgood:

I made a post about them too, I also emailed the seller, he sounds like he knows what he is doing. Beyond that I couldn't tell you if they could hold up to 100hp or 1000. I'll probably be finding out here soon enough.

No personal experience, but I'll tell you most everyone on here will be against it. If you're buying internals from a wholesaler/distributor/retailer on ebay, the phrase "you get what you pay for" applies.

No personal experience (and never will), but I have to emphasis Arthur's point.

Turbocharger internals on eBay = VERY BAD idea

*shakes head* it's not a turbo rebuild kit, it's a bottom end rebuild kit, and both of you are only speculating, not adding anything to the discussion.

For the record, if you get your turbo rebuild kit from g-pop shop on ebay I've never heard of anyone not liking them. The prices are stupid cheap too.

I'll agree, ebay turbos are kinda hit or miss, but I've not ever read anything abut the bottom end rebuilds for these particular engines. Like I said in the other post, I've seen some ebay pistons for other car brands that are eutectics and can barely hold up to N/A conditions, I've also seen set's of new in box, brand name forged pistons going for $100 less than what you can get at any non-ebay shop.

I don't see the difference between parts dinosaur and someone with an ebay shop, aside from the fact that there are people who have tried PD of course :D

*edit* my bad, turns out even PD has an ebay shop
http://myworld.ebay.com/ebaymotors/partsdinosaur/
so that would be a wholesaler, on ebay, that everyone has good things to say about. Weird.

Anyways, all I want is someone to say "I have these pistons, they split in half @ 5psi on my first run out" or "I have these pistons, I've been abusing them and they call me daddy and ask for more." Or even somewhere in between. I can guess at the quality just as good as everyone else can.

I bought a 91 laser rs, the timming belt had went and I needed all new bottom end internals. I got mine off of ebay from the sellers "goenginedirect" (should be right)and they distribute topline parts witch are known to have great quality. I'm going strong with no problems and soon to be turning the boost to 20 :).

i am actually in the process of using the rebuild kit. and i am happy so far. i say go for it. worst comes to worst its only 325 shipped.

im doing it.hell its cheep enough. it comes in one box parts look exactly like oem i have put them side by side but i am going to use a greddy t-belt. it comes with all gaskets and bearings. i blew my rings and got it for that. but it will be good to know that their will be new gaskets everywhare. and a fresh bottom end

The seller nor the source aren't of much concern, compared to what they're selling. Go with established manufacturers, selling names you've heard of. If you find them on eBay, all the better. But be aware the automotive section of eBay may have a higher fraud rate than any two of their other areas combined.

the kit is made by TopLine, and its now $305.00 shipped. Slowboy sells the topline kit for $489.00 If its the same manufacturer shouldn't it be the same quality as long as craftsmanship is concerned?

I did not see an oil pump in the Ebay ad - which would make it a bit different from the one we sell, just an FYI!

eh...

i guess try it...since not alot have..that way you'll be able to either help us decide on getting a deal, or not getitng it when we think

'man..that kit really f'ed up his car..' :p

I bought and used a set of itm pistons off ebay . I used the rings to and ive had good sucsess . Ive ran 25+ pounds on them and no problems. So it might be good ? Just have to let us know.

Use parts dinosoar, very good service and parts. I know a guy on here boosting 35psi on the ITM pistons and ACL bearings, but has a MLS head gasket and ARP headstuds. Part together a rebuild kit through parts dinosoar and get the MLS head gasket and buy some ARP head studs through a vendor somewhere. It will hold up as long as everything is don right when its built!
wow brought up form the dead...

I had my 7 bolt rebuilt by a local reputable engine reman that offers 50k warrenty's. They exclusively use topline rebuild components unless premium parts are requested. There main contract is for the us goverment doing diesel motors. After about 1k miles I started having clutch and shifting problems. I put a new clutch in and it was improved but not 100%. Shortly after I started hearing a ticking when I pressed the clutch in. Needless to say it had crankwalked. I took it in under warrenty and they refused to repair it because I used a non oem clutch! Now I have a 6 bolt and am using oem components because I am not throwing good money at bad again. Now as far as you ebay kit I suggest topline.

I live in Italy, Mitsubishi spare parts here are really expensive, so when I had to rebuilt my engine head I bought a kit from ebay: the price was reasonable and my workshop told that I made a good choice. The job has been carried out properly and the engine is running well. Obviously, in the USA you can find lots of spares, both new and used, like FIAT in Italy, but my opinion is that those kits are worth the hassle.
