Ebay oil catch can vs. name brand?

Gofast If your still running a mass air flow system watch your fuel trims when using a vented catch can...lows and mids will be maxed out rich because of the unmetered air coming through the filter on the can going back into the intake at idle and partial throttle.

Read the pcv thread posted above...

Catch can running behind the mass needs to be completely sealed or it is basically a bad vacuum leak at idle for the system.

I have the exact one in the pic. Its not installed yet. Ive checked my intake pipe/turbine wheel several times and theres no oil. I have boosted to 27psi. I just have a good system or engine i guess. My pcv functions well so no boost is getting into the VC and the comp numbers are perfect. Ill install it sooner or later and cut it open to baffle it. I think it will work fine.
And why the hell would anyone hook both hoses from the VC to a catch can?? LOL, thatd b funny.
Oc course one goes to vc and the other to intake pipe.

If it's not installed yet, how is everything working so perfectly? And if everything is working that well, why would you want to install something different?

I'm confused.

Horrible idea IMO. Even brand new, they have a pretty large pressure drop when used for slow moving, oil saturated air, and after only a few hours of use they basically become a restriction.

You are better off running an empty can vented to atmosphere than you are putting a restriction like that between the VC and turbo.

You're right. After 400-500 miles a little puddle of oil began to collect towards the bottom of the filter. I would imagine that would eventually turn into an issue. So I'll be taking the filter setup off and running a catch can.

Never had it measured. Not sure how.

But she did stop pulling oil into the intake, which is good.

If this is wrong, i'd love to know why and what should be done correctly.

I would like to know how to measure CC pressure as well.
It looks like I may have to install a breather on my e-bay catch can.:ohdamn:

I have one of the ebay catch cans hooked up off my pcv and intake manifold with a kynar check valve and it works good. Also have a cheap $6 compressor filter from harbor freight hooked up off the air intake to the side of the valve cover where a lot of cars just stick a filter on it and it seems to work good.No oil in my intake pipes anymore.

Im glad I read this cause now im a little confused... I have a small breather filter on my VC where the line used to run to the intake pipe. Just a filter and thats it.... Is that a bad idea or is it ok for now?

I'm a little lost here... don't see why the eBay catch can won't work if installed properly, between the vc and intake pipe. If you guys could actually explain why its a bad idea to install. It would be a great help.

That IS the proper way to do it. When those catch cans have a breather filter on top, or you simply stick a filter off of the VC, all you are doing is creating what is basically a vacuum leak. With no vacuum source for the breather system, crankcase pressure builds, forcing oil through seals, dipsticks popping out, etc.

I know better that to put a breather on it that's allowing metered air to vent to atmosphere. I was more or less asking about the empty can being an issue if everything is installed properly... Thanks for the point in the right direction.

i bought an ebay catch can for my last car it had a threaded plug on the bottom for draining the oil, though it had a breather and the plug had a o-ring gasket it leaked oil horribly out the bottom even thread taped, i geuss u get what u pay for. learned my lesson.

Ok I know this is an old thread, but i found it searching so figured id ask. If a catch can is vented with a filter on top, couldnt you block off the intake pipe nipple, then run vc lines to.catch can? It would vent pressure out, and not cause a vacuum leak anywhere right? Or am i thinking about this wrong?

Technicalities. If you're running a vented catch can and plugged off the nipple on the intake pipe using the stock MAF, you are technically getting rid of metered air.

Why vent when you could create a vacuum in there though.. Much better for everything.
