Hello. Everytime I come around a corner at high R's my car likes to eat my serpentine belt. Someone told me that the powersteering pump on a stock 420A engine is engine speed sensitive and not road speed. They suggested fixing this problem by keep the valve for the pump fully open all the time by placing washers inside? Im tired of going through belts faster than oil, but I have no idea where to start. Any idea what this dude was talking about or any other suggestions?

Theory: when you take a spinning disc that is spinning in the vertical position and suddenly change its angle during spinning, there is some lateral torque created on the axis and the disc will shift from a vertical spin to a slight angled spin.

We've all seen videos of people spinning bicycle rim on an horizontal axis and try to turn it laterally .. and it doesn't happen-it wants to "lean" towards that turn.

..the pulleys are doing the same thing, esp if they are under high speed revs -flexing. Thus, with this flex, the serpentine belt possibly can't handle this sudden flex.

-something to think about .. DSM

is your p/s pulley flush with the crank pulley?

I would go with his suggestion and check this. I had this problem with my 97 GS. Because the bracket was bent ever so slightly it caused the belt to get frayed. Luckily that's all it did and never ate through them. Check to see that it is lined up and straight.

Yes, I have checked the alignment on the pulleys more than once to make sure that wasn't the problem. I have also stopped flying around corners. But I beleive I have found the problem. When i took off the belt and power steering pulley, I made a point to check the power steering... (spindle?), if you will, and it is bent downward at about a 5 degree angle and also has a fair amount of play in it.

I'm having a weird problem too, my ps belt is like new, and tight, but it squeals randomly. When I just pull out of gear to coast it will do it, sometimes when I downshift, sometimes when it starts, but not always.. just really randomly and I can't figure the stupid thing out.

checked two differnt yards and all the talons were in peices WITH NO STEERING PUMPS! o well... carquest has one for 80 bucks so i guess ill just have to stick it out :p:talon:
