The other night i was racin around with one of my friends who has a dsm aswell, and after alittle hard drivin my headlights turned off. I pulled over to check it out and my dump tube had melted through my alternator wires. My headlights would not turn on and my battery light is lit on my dash. Any ideas what this could be?
Thanx
Justin

Not to be a smartass, but you did repair/replace the damaged wires, right? If so, it sounds like your alternator is damaged, maybe the wires shorted together? That's the usual symptoms (battery light and no headlights). Good luck though!

Well, my wastegate plug had heated up and popped out, (i have an external, so stock was plugged) anyway, i heard nasty exaust leak and no boost, i saw it leaking out the front of the manifold.. So I went on my way to head home, and about 1 block from home, my whole car shut off, i restarted it, it shut off again for good.. It melted and fuzed the headlight wires.. causing a major short that shorted out the 30/40 fuses for ignition and internal lights or something, i dont remember.. that sucked =( but yah sounds like your alternator is damaged.

dump tube is commonly known for melting wires near it. best thing to do is repair all wires, and wrap the dump tube with heat wrap then build a heatshield or something.

yah, when i pulled over the wires were touchin, so i used a scrfew driver to put some space between them and drove home. I haven't used the car in almost a month, due to lack of sanity left due to this car, but luckily my friends with their dsm's and supra's got me motivated. I am gonna replace the alternator tonight and see if that does the trick.
Thanx

i had alternator problems for over a month (during th summer too!) i had to severly limit the amount of times i started my car, and the night time driving, no AC, no music, nothin. Jumper cables always in the car, and got like 2 jumpstarts a week :thumbdown . i had to plug in my battery to a charger everynight like a freakin electric car, i almost gave up and bought a new alt. however we took it to the shop and they told me some of the connectors were bad and the alternator was heating up so much that it melted the sauder(sp?) inside the alt, 40 bucks later and good as new (before this we thought it was the wiring order and changed the order around and still no charge, but now its all better! best feeling in the world having ur car running)

ok, i channged the alternator and that wasn not the problem. My battery is charging, but my battery light is on, and my ebrake light stays on. Plus my headlights do not work, where should i start to diagnose this problem?

The main thing was that there was more damage i intially thought and had to replace a bunch of the wiring harness and reroute the dump.

Same thing happened to me one time. Just heat wrap the exhaust and/or pin the wires away from the dump tube with zip ties. (gotta love zip ties)
