does anyone know if it's ok to hook up just one coil on a dual voice coil sub?
would it hurt the sub?

the reason i ask is cause i have a dual 4ohm sub and i want to hook it up as a 4ohm load. if you use both voice coils you either have a 2ohm or 8ohm load.

I wouldn't do it.
I suspect that you will end up with an under powered sub as you will only be driving 1/2 the needed power + the sub is set up for both to be driven.
You will probably end up with less dbs of low bass and sloppy bass everywhere.

What type of amp are you using? Is it bridged 2 ohm stable, is it not bridgeable? is it a 1 channel sub amp?

It would be preferable to bridge the amp and then run the 8 ohm load unless the amp is 2 ohm stable, than to only run one voice coil IMO.

or you can trade it for a sub with either 2ohm DVCs or 8ohm DVCs :thumb:

i'm running 2 12's to a mono block amp

the amp either runs 750 watts at 4ohm or 1500 at 2hom. so i can hook up each sub as a 8ohm sub and then the two of them would make a 4ohm on the amp but as you can see i'm loosing half the pwr.

if i hook up only one coil on each sub then it would be a 2ohm, but i don't want sloppy sunding bass. and i'm making a spl car so that wouldn't work

i guess the only option is to get 2ohm dvc's

thanks.

you have about 10x less THD and better control when you are in 4 ohm

However with bass the box has more to do with it than the actual ohm load your amp sees.

If you have 2 subs each with a DVC at either 2 or 8 ohms each then you can run the amp in 2 ohm mode and it will not have noticably less control than at 4 ohms and 750 w.

BTW are these peak power figures you are giving or RWS power.

750 RMS would seem to be more than ample for SQ
for SPL you can care less how sloppy it is, just how loud it goes. run the 2 ohm set up but be sure the amp stays cool, recommend fan cooling.
