Richmond Hill,
Is it possible to have 2 intercoolers in your car, one that is mounted in the front, and another mounted behind the passenger side wheel and have them connected? This is on a 92 talon turbo.

like the wiseman said, you are only going to introduce more pressure drop, you would be making the air travel THAT much farhter. Good intercoolers have very minimal pressure drop, although the smaller the intercooler and the shorter the piping... the smaller the pressure drop. I would think that a stock SMIC has a slight pressure drop, more of a reason to not even deal with it after you have already upgraded to a FMIC. What kind of intercooler did you by anyway?

What you'll find is that it's not so much about pressure drop as how much flow the intercooler can handle in addition to it's cooling capacity. Kevin Jewer, one of our Wiseman, correctly asserts that when it comes to tuning on pump gas you want the coolest possible air intake temps to ward off knock.

As an example, I run a 50 trim at 51 lbs/min (~510 crank horsepower) on a Dejon 2G sidemount. While the cooling capacity isn't as good as an FMIC it flows as much air as a 3.5" diameter piece of straight pipe. I could run upwards of a 60-1 on it and not have flow issues, but I won't get the greatest cooling capacity.

Introducing a second intercooler would be much less worthwhile than something like methanol or a properly sized FMIC. On a smaller framed turbo it would actually hurt performance.

Hey was wondering if this is a stupid newb idea. I was thinking about running a small bar and plate FMIC (probably the SB street core) into a large bar and plate SMIC (probably a bullseye). It seems like there would be about a 1 1/2 feet of extra piping over a normal front mount setup with the same if not more volume than a full racing front mount core.. but without the radiator being blocked. What ya guys thing?

Well, seems like alot of guys with large intercoolers have heating issue's, especially those you run laps. Im building the car to be a endurance circuit breaker and would like to have the radiator exposed to lots of cold air. The front mount im thinking of is only 8" in height so would only take up a small percentage of the radiator. In addition i can run a intercooler-Co2 setup on the sidemount without anyone knowing a sidemount is even there.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. You would probably get more pressure drop since you've got 2 IC's, but you may not even notice the difference. Do you think that the second one is even necessary though? I'm sure it can't really hurt except what little it weighs.

A decent 8" tall core might be enough depending on what you plan to do with it. Remember though, the mouth on our cars is only about that tall so that is the portion that will be blocked either way. I'd personally just remove the fog lights and build a little ducting from the fog area toward the radiator. That should add quite a bit more airflow around the intercooler.

Eff me, I didn't realize you referenced a side mount, I read that you want to run a small front mount into a large front mount, hence my question above ROTFL

you can make a little dam under the radiator to direct air up there then you can use what ever intercooler you want. I have seen this on many road race dsms.

I actually made a small path to the radiator by taking out the center piece between the 2 headlights (1991 car-popups) and using a grinder to cut away the hood latch braket (have hood pins).

You'll have a lot of pressure drop from two intercoolers, and I don't think the sidemount is going to do anything to intake temps after the air has already passed through the front mount. Get a front mount and make some ducting to route airflow where you want it to go.

Just what I was thinking. You beat me to it.

Just for your information, before he sold his car Greg Collier utilized a large custom-built SMIC on his Laser (before his move to a FMIC).

I can't imagine how. The only ways I could think of is routing them either sequencially or splitting the piping after the turbo. Both would need large amounts of piping.

It has been discussed in depth on codsm:

If anything I'd go with a cheap FMIC before I would 2 sidemounts, but you might be able to get away with it if you got 2 Supra side mounts, but for a simmilar price you could get a cheap FMIC setup...or look into the Starion setups, they can be rewelded to make a decent FMIC.
