Richmond Hill,
Is it possible to have 2 intercoolers in your car, one that is mounted in the front, and another mounted behind the passenger side wheel and have them connected? This is on a 92 talon turbo.

Has Anyone Welded Two Side Mounts Together And If So What Were The Results?
It's been done, and the results were good. I can't seem to find a picture/thread where I read about it, but it was a few years ago. If you're paying for the labor to have it welded, then it won't be worth it, but if you're doing the work yourself, then it may pay off.

anyone think of having twin smic? use the second intercooler on driver side and have a pipe connect them? just throwing out this idea...
Worse idea. Someone here tried it once, and the results were less than par. A single turbo set-up will benefit more from a single, properly sized intercooler over two small twin intercoolers any day. IIRC, there was a problem with either pressure drop or heat soaking...

How, the tanks are on the top and bottom? Are you planning to use it as a front mount?
They just cut the endtanks off and weld the cores together.

Dejon used to sell / make that twin side mount in to a front mount. I just check there web site but it was taken off.

i am welding them side by side then mking bigger end tanks, and bigger inlet and output pipes and bolting it back in the stock location i have the intercoolers.3 seems a little much, ugly but who cares as long as it works

.............. bolting it back in the stock location i have the intercoolers.

Will that fit?

i am bolting them side by side then making bigger end tanks.

WTF

I'd have to see this...i understand what you are doing, i just don't get why. You can source an ebay FMIC for 100$. Unless you have two end takes sittng around....
I am usually all for innovation and fab work, but this i am not following...

i have upper and lower pipes and two smic usic scrap pieces to make end tanks for 100 bucks it would be easier but then i would need all the piping. are those ebay intercoolers any good.i have welded alot of intercoolers time i have money i dont.

I know the feeling of time VS. money. From everything i have read the ebay intercoolers are almost, if not as efficient and the piping is easy since you weld. People have been using these ebay units on RX7's with great results also, and those are known for heatsoak. I was planning to try one on the TSi and see how it worked for me.

I would be curious to see your end product, if you go through with the setup.:thumb:

Paul, I know the exact link to which you are refering. I've been looking for about a half hour now, and am currently giving up. But the link shows how a Supra owner fabricated three Supra SMICs together to make one FMIC. It worked pretty well for him.

Funny thing is, I used to run across the link all the time with a simple Google search. Now I get nada. :(

With the good qaulity of ebay front mounts, you would be crazy not to buy one

But if your really strappped on cash, and have the skills to build a IC your self then id do it

If you plan it out right, making an intercooler can be a good idea.

That's a 4 core made out of 80's turbo dodges. The DSM SMIC is thicker, and more square. It will probably flow better, but too thick is bad, I forget why. Anyway, that 4 core was enough to put a K car into the 10.5's, would probably have gotten 9's if he had kept on racing it.

Hi!

This thread has slept too long.. :)

I currently have 2 stock 2G smic's. My plan is to keep the one installed in the stock location where it is, and put the second one in front of it, and use silicone Y-couplers before and after them.

This way I will get a minimum of extra piping, but "twice" the flow capacity. Slower flow through the smic's.

From my reading on the forums I have learned that only approx. 1/3 of the amount of air going through a IC will work on it, so my theory is that I got a little higher air temp to the second one, but there are still some "effective" air left for cooling the second IC.

I really have no budget for this. I can make whatever needed for the install at work.. (not the silicone y-hoses.)

This way I'll get a BETTER solution than stock. I only have a S16G to feed the engine, with a 350whp goal.

a bar and plate intercooler is a superior design over the fin style stock intercooler. I picked up a Hahn SMIC. It works great! I'll put it performance against two stock intercoolers any day.
It's a $$$ issue.. :)

Otherwise I would have gotten a Dejon one.. :(

Hey!

This is my plan.

I hope it will help me boost 25psi'ish.. :)

Have a nice evening guys.. :)

That is my plan exactly! :)

The rear one will get slightly higher airtemp for cooling, but I hope to be better off with higher flow-capacity and the air moving more slowly through the IC's and make them more efficient, than just running the stocker alone..

I know this is stupid compared to a fmic, but for now it's a question of sticking with the stocker or try to fit 2 of it inside.

A Dejon smic will cost me 800$, arrived, and a fmic will be 1500$ish, it depends. That's just not possible what so ever now...

Also, I cannot use a fmic due to stupid regulations..

The airflow coming from the top will try to battle it's way out on the bottom. Just skip it.
Even with the crazy high shipping costs, you should still be able to get a $300 ebay FMIC for $425 shipped to you. And those ebay FMICs will still work a heck of a lot better than a juryrigged twin intercooler setup.
Unfortunately there isn't room enough in that fenderwell to have two stacked intercoolers like that. The rear most intercooler will be sitting on the tire. And have you taken off the fender and front clip recently? The area you would be trying to pass two runs of intercooler piping thru is very thick heavy structural. Very very hard to cut your way thru. You would have to do a serious amount of hacking to the front clip and the unibody to be able to run twin intercoolers setup like that.
I run a Hahn SMIC which works perfect for the setup I have (FP BigT28) and to help it out with cooling duties I fabbed up a sheetmetal aluminum intercooler scoop. You could do something like that for your stock smic and see bigger better cooling gains than you would with going to a twin intercooler setup. I modified my front with the smic scoop. There are other guys that have built ducts to the smic behind the front clip, leaving the front clip stock looking in appearance. Look at my profile of pics for my smic intercooler scoop.
I ran into a guy a while back that modified a Nitrous intercooler cooler to fit his smic. I suppose the same thing could be done with a co2 intercooler cooler. That would be pretty easy to do. I have seen some of those intercooler coolers going for pretty cheap on ebay.
Maybe even put a ten inch puller fan on the back of your stock intercooler?

Thanks for your input! :) Think I read the thread on your cooling duct a while back! :)
