DSMLink + more?

Howdy folks.
I've got an Eprom ECU in my car and am going to upgrade to either 550cc or 660cc injectors soon. I plan on getting the DSMLink setup, because it seems to be my best option. I have a couple questions for those of you who use it though...

Do I need anything else like a logger or afc to run the DSMLink?
Does the Laptop need to plugged in all the time? or just for tuning?

you don't need anything else besides the laptop with the proper serial port and no it doesn't need to be plugged in all the time.

Why does everyone think you need a laptop with DSMLink? I have been running it for a year or more with just a Palm Pilot, and using my desktop PC to store the data collected by the Palm. Laptops suck to lug around.
