ok have a good ? for tuner with dsmlink experience
i have a 95 tsi awd with e-prom ecu. should i get dsmlink or sell it to some one who really needs it and just get a 97 gsx ecu. will the 97 gsx ecu work for me ? I have an auto tranny so would i be able to use dsmlink to its potential, is it worth it? also is an ecu interchangeable regardless of drivrtrain auto/5 sp. Please help me out so in return maybe i can help someone else in need.
thanks , steve

I recommend getting DSMLink. I also have an A/T and just got DSMLink a month or so ago. It contains one very useful A/T-specific feature in that it retains ignition timing during shifts, whereas the stock ECU cuts timing to zero during every shift.

There's other useful stuff as well and yes, you will be able to use it to its full potential. BTW, auto and 5-speed ECUs are compatible, since the TCU controls the transmission, not the ECU. And I don't think you can just drop a 97 ECU into yours since the CAS signal is different on 97+ cars. At a minimum, you'd need to swap some spark plug wires around to compensate, but it still might not run right. If you can find a 95-96 ECU, then it should be plug and play.

thanks. but i now have related ?'s .
i'm gonna be running the gm maft. so will i be able to use the dsmlink and will it be worth it.?
also i'm doing a 1g headswap so i'm using the 93-94 cas , its the one thats closest to 95-96 style. ? where would that leave me now?
Cant i adjust timing in between shifts with a S-afc or a maft translator or an A-vcr ?
thanks again, i'm just really lost with the tuning part of these cars.

I will answer what I can:

i'm gonna be running the gm maft. so will i be able to use the dsmlink and will it be worth it.?
Yes, of course. As far as tuning goes dsmlink is a far superior system but many people use a gmmaf and translator along with it.

Cant i adjust timing in between shifts with a S-afc or a maft translator or an A-vcr ?
Without being mean: You need to find out what the items you just listed actually do. Not one of them deals directly with timing.

KPWSerpiente covered the other two, so to kinda answer this one, the answer is: I don't know exactly. I am almost positive it can be (and has been) done, though, but I just don't know anything about it. Maybe somebody else can jump in and help out on this one.

Go with the DSMlink..I have an automatic and once i put that DSMlink on wow the difference in driving is awesome... Another feature is the stutter box..it sounds wicked as hell when ur power breaking.. Hey are u that guy..that i sold my trunk cover to on ebay?
