This is my first DSM, and after 3 months of cutting, welding, bolting, and cursing i finnally got it on the road.
I Had a question about drivetrain noise, how noisy is the AWD drivetrain supposed to be?
It seems that when i am coasting, the car makes a humming/grinding noise. Not sure what the noist is, or could be. All the fluid levels are good, and fresh, I am not sure if the cars is supposed to be this noisy or not...
Any input would be appreciated!

can you rule out tire noise? (run your flat hand over the tire )
can you rule out a faulty wheel bearing?

just to add to this, does the pitch of the sound change as you turn the steering wheel back and forth? If it does, your wheel bearing is the culprit.

When my car was an automatic it was pretty quiet while coasting. When I switched it to 5 speed, it was loud as hell. It was eather the transmission or transfercase or both. MY Transfercase is starting to go out and the noise I heard when I first switched has gotten louder now.

you could always pay $65 for a safety inspection from Mitsu and save yourself some headache. They will list everything wrong with the car.

I put it on a lift and listened to the noise, aounds like it is a bad passenger side bearing.
