I have searched a ton, but can't seem to find an explaination for this noise I get...

I have a 1999 Eclipse GSX 5 speed with solid rear differential subframe bushings, DIY poly mounts on the front and two side motor/tranny mounts.

When I drive over 25-30mph I get a metallic noise that sounds live something scraping on the ground. I can swirve and the sound doesn't go away. Accel or decel after 30mph the noise does not change. It is not rpm induced but speed induced. I know it is in the front half of the car. Seems to be passenger side. I lifted the front end up and the drivers and passengers wheels have no play (rules out wheel bearing I beleive...) I dont have eneough stands to lift the whole car up.... I think it is most likly a transmission bearing. How can I troubleshoot and confrim my noise?

Thanks in advance, BTW trans is full of oil. I am changing the rear end fluid asap, I got some roil purple 75w-90 synthetic I will be putting in.

I might try changing the transmission and xfer case fluid soon aswell. I have read that for the trans a xfer the best fluid is redline mtl and mt90, 3 quarts to do both. I was planning 2 quarts of mt90 and one of mtl. Nebraska gets cold in the winter....

Thanks in advance...!

Kind of clueless on gsx's, have you had a chance to check all of your fluid levels. rear diff., transfer case, tranny, not sure if it has a front diff., but i would probably start there. Try rotated the wheels with it in neutral. You may not hear the noise becasue you are not going the speed where it starts I would recommend putting the car on a lift if accessable, or buying two more jack stands or borrowing some from a friend. Put the car up on stands and accel the car to 25 30 mph and see where the noise is coming from. i have had to do that with my 2g gst before. Be carefull tho the cars will vibrate when doing it tho.

Ok my dad runs a car dealership in town, I will see If I can borrow a lift. I also had him ride in the car with me tonight and he is pretty sure its a driveshaft carrier bearing. I know for a fact the transfer case is full, Fluid came out when I pulled the drain plug. It is plenty full. I will change the rear end fluid soon and hopefully that will get rid of all the noise the solid subframe bushings make.

For the subframe bushing noise, there is a lube out there that you can put on them. It is water resisant and wont wash off but it takes away the annoying squiking noise. but you have to keep putting it on every so often but way worth the money.

Hey when you change the rear end fluid see about running it over a towl when you are changing the oil out. Just a good time to see how your rear end is doing, checking to see if there are metal shavings or chunks in the oil. Shavings are eh, ok just means it is wearing which its going to. Chunks not so good. just kind of a mechanic tip. I do it to all my cars tranny's and rear ends. Just lets you know what to expect

They are solid aluminum.... Not polyurethane...

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! It was a little metal ring on the back of the transfer case that covers the driveshaft that got dented and spun at high rpm.... I cut it off and the noise is gone!!! Now I am going to change the trans, xfer and rear end fluid to hopefully get rid of any other noises and calm down the solid subframe bushing noise...Grr...

agreed, hopefully the new fluid will make me feel better when it is making noise..LOL... I will probably get some poly ones from extreme psi soon, just 150$ seems like a lot....

it is alot but deffinatly worth the price. i wish i was back at home in kansas i would say we should meet up in york or something or concordia and do some comparisons. and use each others cars as idea's and stuff
