drivetrain locks up

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About a week ago I started driving the car on a reg basis.(90 awd eclipse) I drove it on the interstate to school the first of this week and noticed a "whining noise" coming from the rear of the car. Every now and then a popping noise would come from somewhere under the car. I checked the fluid in the rear and everything was fine. Well now we are here at the present ; I took it to the track because the noise had not happened again; and smoked what was left of the factory clutch. I had enough clutch to get me home and my wife and I headed home. ON the way home the car started popping every now and again so I figured something bad was going to happen. Any how, I get about 4 miles from home and something pops real loud and the car pretty much locks up. All I can think about is the recall on the transfer case. I try to move the car but it is in an awful bind either in the transfer case or the rearend. I have it hauled home and go to ease it off the roll back and it rolls fine. I crank it and pull it in the garage nothing!!! It seemed fine. It had freed itself up. I look at the tire sizes and the front are 205/55/16 and the rear is 225/55/16 I measure the height and the front is roughly 23 1/2 and the rear 24 1/8. Could this be the problem or could it be the TC or the rear end? I have to check the fluoid level on the TC tomorrow after I get home from school so I have no info on it yet. I now have to put a clutch in and figure out what is up with the locking up problem.

Isn't that transfer case recall only on 2gs?? I have no clue, just wondering. Also, with AWD, you are supposed to have the same size tires on all four corners. A 205/55 225/55 ratio mix might not be that big, but it might still have something to do with it.

The transfer case recall is for all -1gs, and 2gs. Also is it multiple pops or just one at a time?... i dont think a transfer case would pop, but rather make a horrific grinding noise(like mine does) when they start to go bad.

I dropped the TC and found it bone dry and and metal chunks falling out of it. This is definetly the problem. I only hope that it didnt mess anything else up.

This is what I found when I dropped the transfer case and took it apart:

ouch man that sucks, i guess the griding noise from the rear of my car isnt the TC then... . Have you had any recall work done to it?

None that I know of. It looks like there is junkyard writing on the transfer case so it probably has been replaced before.

My ex had a 90 awd talon and we were driving to orgeon and the transfer case locked up on us on I-5. We were going 70mph luckily we were in the left lane and we had a spot to stop at. I knew what it was right when it happend and I was kicking myself because I just had the recall done on my car like the week before. I was going to check hers but didn't get around to it yet. But the dealer put in a new t-case and no cost to us just the tow bill.
