My car feels fine for awhile then it feels like the back tires start to lock up or skip. My friend and I added gear oil to the trans case, the rear end and the tranny. I still have the problem but not as bad. Could the oil be to thin and its getting to hot and locking up. ive heard it's the transfer case locking up but im not sure or could it be the center diff. ? let me know what you all think. Thank you!

umm this sounds kind of dangerous, when does it happen? Do you still drive it? Does it happen when you go around turns? Does it happen when you are driving hard? How long does it stay locked for, until you slow down or stop?

doesnt seem to be when goin around turns. i mainly notice it when goin straight and it usually happens during normal driving. and they dont stay locked it only like it grabs for a sec then keeps goin. im sure it is dangerous but it doesnt happen all the time and i dont have another car to drive. my friends are gonna look at my center difff and t-case but i just wanted to see if anyone had a good idea of what it may be.

ok heres a few ideas and remedies

1. There is insufficient final drive gear backlash, to fix this you can adjust it...more on this later.

2. Excessive Drive pinion preload...can also be adjusted.

3. Excessive side bearing preload...adjust.

4. Excessive differential gear backlash...adjust.

5. Excessive clutch plate preload...can also be adjusted.

6. Bad gear oil...replace

7. Not enough gear oil...add.

8. Your limited slip could be damaged, but I doubt it, otherwise it would happen all the time. You may just want to pull that and check it out anyway.

First off, you should go jack up the rear end of the car, spin one of the back tires in any direction, they should both move the same direction.

I also strongly advise against driving with it doing this. Its not only a danger to you, but also to others.

the car is under control and i pull over immediately when it starts. thanks for your ideas. i can also feel it coming. it's like it gets its self goin then does it. I has done it n neutral as well as in gear. n then above a certain rpm it feels like it stops. it's just like something catches. i'm gonna get my dsm guardian angels to look over the tranny the center diff along with some other things. i think im gonna get a thicker gear oil n see if that changes nething and i may also change out the transfer case

It sounds like its binding, before you do anything with the transfer case, save yourself some headaches, and do as you said, Change fluids to OEM specs which is API classification GL-5 or higher. Should take just under a quart. 80w 90 should do the trick.

Try something like this....

Although some people may tell you otherwise for using synthetic.

ok i used gl5 80w90 n the transfer case... but in the rear end was this valveoline stuff, but i think it was still 80 w 90. im not sure i may do the rear end again and the transfer case just because.

ok sounds good, I was kinda hoping a wiseman would poke around in here, because this can turn into an even more unsafe situation quickly.
