The hubs wore completely off both of my PTT Twin Discs right in the middle of the road during a 3rd gear WOT blast with no warning leaving me instantly stranded.

I have heard several reasons why that happened. Some say that there was a problem with the hub design of the discs but that the issue has been corrected, some say that the clutch hubs are softer than the input shaft to protect it, some say that the bearings in the tranny cause this.

Money is tight right now.

I sent the discs, pressure plate, and Flywheel over to PTT and it turns out that I need a set of discs and the pressure plate is warped. It is going to cost me $550 bucks which I don't really have right now.

I have read good things about the XTD Stage 4 PP/Clutch/Flywheel setup and was thinking of downgrading to save a few hundred bucks. I can get that setup off of ebay for like $328 shipped to my door and it is all new parts.

I have a few concerns:

1) Since I sent everything off to PTT, my pressure plate bolts are still there. Do you know if the XTD clutch kit comes with the PP bolts?

2) I could swear I remember something about the PTT Flywheels using bolts from a 7 bolt due to length. I don't want to have to spend the money on 6 bolt bolts if I go with the XTD.

3) I remember something about having to reuse your own ring gear? If I get the XTD setup, I am worrying about losing that too.

Basically, I am saving about $220 + bucks by downgrading to the XTD stage 4. I just don't want it to be a situation where I have to buy a whole bunch of stuff and have it equal the price of a PTT if I am not careful.

I think that we have all had experiences where being cheap costs us more money. It usually doesn't happen to me, but in a case like this I want to think twice about it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

You should be installing new OEM flywheel to crank bolts anytime you take off the flywheel anyways. Unless of course you had ARPs unsure if those are TTY.

Anyways, if it is just the PP to Flywheel bolts. Go to your local hardware or fastenal and pick some grade 8 bolts to fit. Total should be under 3$.

The XTD clutch is rock solid. I would swear by it.

Thank you for your good advice! What about the ring gear? Maybe I should just pay the return shipping and get my old PTT back??

You mean, you think the XTD should come with a ring gear? Sorry I don't know what a ring gear is LOL.

Does this setup have a ring gear too?

I am just trying to stay ahead and figure out what I need without getting desperate since it isn't my DD (my DD just broke today though so I need to get this car back up).

I am also wondering if I will suffer a bit of performance loss considering that the PTT was only like 17 pounds with the PP/Clutch/and TB. It lasted about 25k miles between myself and the previous owner which is what I hear is also about what the XTD lasts if you are not too hard on either.

Also like that it comes with a clutch alignment tool...another thing I'd have to buy for the PTT. Not sure if the PTT uses a special alignment tool either.

I don't know about the ring gear. As far as I know it should come with a ring gear. I have used the clutches, never the flywheel. One thing I do like about the flywheel is that it is made from chromoly, whilst most are aluminum.

The ring gear is what is around the flywheel that feeds into your starter motor. And yes XTD clutches are awesome. Great clutch when you are on a budget.

just make sure to get a OEM TOB with it!!! XTD's are noisy pieces of garbage!

Thank you!

I don't mind the noise to save money. Are the TOB(s) known to fail or is it just noisy? Stepping down from a PTT I could handle the noise looool.

LOL, haha....would still like feedback on the TOB it's provided with. Noise I can live with, premature failure no way. I read someone used it with no issues.

Oem tobs are like 20 bucks, get ready for some left leg exercise. I swear my XTD clutch was retarded heavy. Probably not good on the crank either.

Lol, ok mail me the money and I will go to the dealer and get an OEM TOB. :D

Seriously, you have a point but things are definitely tight. I'd rather use that money for tranny fluid if I can avoid it. If it's a case where people can't handle the noise I sure can.

If it is a case where I have to drop the tranny over 30 bucks well you got me.

I am not in a big rush. I can wait.

Some of me is thinking about the PTT though. With it's own TB etc and not needing to play around with the fork and the pivot ball etc.

"I read someone used it with no issues" Lol come on man. The OEM one is the one to have. Don't skip out on parts. :aha:

XTD TOB are iffy. they sometimes work, they sometimes don't. I would say go an OEM one for 20 bucks for the piece of mind you will get. because think about if the XTD TOB broke, your really going to wish that you spent the extra 20 bucks...

I understand money is tight. I was there not too long ago, and am still recovering.

The way I have learned is, "do it right the first time, and if you don't have the money to, wait until you do."

Anyway, hope this helps. Good luck.:thumb:

Thanks everyone, I have enough info to make a decision.

I am currently running the xtd stage 4 unsprung 6 puck, flywheel (which came with a ring gear), and pressure plate. They say it makes the car completely "unstreetable" but i drive mine daily with no issues as long as your used to it. It grabs excellent in any condition you throw at it.. I did use the xtd TOB and ive never had a problem. i think they actually sent me a koyo TOB if i remember correctly. but i can tell you that when installing the pressure plate i snapped 2 of the oem bolts that hold it on and had to get grade 10.9 bolts to hold it down. and yes, your left leg is going to get a workout!! hope i could help answer some of your questions.
