down time, what to do?

ok guys lets hear your expert advice. my car recently had a catastrophic timing belt failure and there went all my valves. Well I now have time to do small things to the car that I couldn't have done before being that it was my DD. Well that's where you guys come in. What are some of the cheap/free things you guys have done to your whips to enhance performance.
I'm pretty handy and am willing to try anything that's not too drastic. I have 15 gallon air compressor and a die grinder, I was looking to port my turbo to match the gasket. I heard that was a free upgrade but didn't know how difficult it was.
Can you guys follow dsmers chime in and give me any other things i could do. Don't want to spend to much money as I'm trying to save to get the parts I need to get it running again.

Port your turbo
Clean out your intercooler
Clean up your engine bay
Fix any leaks you might of had
Swap dry rotted hoses that might leak down the road

clean like crazy. A clean car is a happy car. And for some real power, get some NOS stickers. , just kidding. I would do some engine cleaning, IC pipes, etc. as stated above. How often do you get a chance to do so? Especially those wires you keep thinking, I need to clean, straighten, and fix those up.

Last time my car was on jack stands for a while i changed my trans, tranfer and diff fluid, preasure washed engine bay/undercarriage. Stopped by the local pick-a-part every week end and found nicer trim pieces for the interior till it looked show room fresh haha. basically nothing performance but made the car a lot cleaner to work on.

I was just going to say, do a wire tuck, but someone beat me to it! If you have the right tools, you could do a little custom fabrication like relocate the battery to the trunk, maybe do a little port and polish here and there. Junk yards are a few places to find good materials. I've always enjoyed picking up parts, and tinkering with them to get them to cooperate with my system. Maintenence is always good for the car; making sure that all your fittings are tight and that your throttle is cleaned; things of that nature.

ok well I started taking the engine apart and found a surprise

I was planning on porting the turbo but found this. Whats the worst that could happen it I did port it and put it back on? Or should i just leave it alone. I have to put it back on because as stated above I'm already trying to save money to get it running again.

i was going to haha thats pretty damn bad dude haha hot sides are easy to find man like criagslist, any of your dsm buddys around have any old turbos? or blown turbos? i have a couple of 14b hot sides? and 16g's!!? but live soo effin far away haha or id help you man

does it have to be a 16 g hot side? I have a small 16g, does any other ones fit?

I think 14b and any variation of the 16G will work.

Would the big 16 transfer over to the small 16. I found one on eBay for $85 with a 7cm housing. Would that work?

Yes all housing from 16g and 14b turbos can transfer over. They're td05 turbines.

Ok awesome. Now I don't have to buy a whole turbo.

Now to the wore tuck. How do most of you hide your injector wires with splicing? I was thinking of trying to relocate the coils but don't know where to hide it.

14b's have a 6cm turbine housing.
16g's have a 7cm turbine housing.

Get the smaller one if you want quicker spool. Get the large on if you want more top end.

I also suggest cleaning up the engine bay. Getting rid of excess dirt and grime will make it much more pleasant to work on down the road. It will also make it easier to find leaks and catch them early.

as said above, jafromobile on youtube is perfect for anything you need. timing how to's and porting. but i would clean up everything possible. check over the undercarriage and engine bay, wire tuck (as said above) new vacuum hoses.

?Treat your car like any other fix whats broken and what hasnt been addressed, mines been down so many times i know it inside and out, including the wirining tuck earlier. Definitley on next project, Clean, replace, so many options of what you want to do.
