No, you can leave it hooked to the engine when you pull it out. Just make sure you have all the attaching parts off of the transmissions first, like the axles, mounts, slave cyl. That is how I've always pulled mine.
 
yea but he has a 2g .... it's a little harder to do it that way on a 2g. You CAN do it but you also need to remove the accessory pulleys if you want to go out through the top. If you are dropping it though the bottom then it's not a big deal at all with the trans connected still. For what its worth ... through the top I always just pulled the trans off first.
