Can I get to the speedo gear w/o dropping the tranny?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I just needed confirmation. If the gear inside the tranny is not working, broke, or whatnot, is there any way to inspect or repair it without removing and taking apart the tranny? I just put my car for sale, I think this is the problem, and I don't want to go through that effort if I am just selling it...

Edit- See below for clarification

Easy fix remove speedo sender on top of the trans its only 1bolt,connector, and a clip. Most likely the tab broke off the speed sender($60)if your speedo isn't working.

It's easy to replace. Make sure though that when you unbolt it from the tranny that you remove bolt before sensor. Many people have dropped that one bolt into the hole and then needed to drop the tranny to get it out.

Alright, I looked at my post and I realize that I was not clear. Had some spelling/grammar errors to boot.

I think it is the gear inside the tranny that is broken. I think the sensor is ok. I pulled it out quick and inspected it to find nothing wrong.

Should I take it out again, spin it and see if the speedo registers?

But mine had external teeth on it (unlike the pictured one) so I did not look inside of it like in the picture, maybe it was broken.

Is a FWD sensor the same as AWD?

If you need to replace the plastic speedo gear (and shaft), the part numbers are below:

Check the build-date on your VIN or the door plate to make the proper purchase IF you have the original transmission in the car.

2G AWD
(1994-June 1996) MD746492
(July 1996-1999) MD749150

2G FWD
(1994-1999) MD746492

If the teeth are worn out or shredded, the speed sensor will probably have issues. As well, it is a common problem to have the plug connector crack or break on the engine wiring harness (the plug that actually connects to the speed sensor), so a loose connection will cause this issue as well. Corroded connections are another cause for these problems. If the teeth are actually shredded, there is a reason....you likely have some debris or gear parts bouncing around inside your transmission that took out the sensor. Normally, it is front differential damage, or a chunk of a gear tooth or center diff guts.

Good luck,

Thanks for the help guys! I was about to give up, thinking that it was an internal tranny problem (just pulled it for clutch) but hopefully it is just the inside of that sensor. It got torqued a little while pulling the tranny. Praying for the best...
