having strange Problem I got a 1990 Laser RS Turbo with 265Kish miles on it. original motor, rebuilt head. 6 bolt, turbo, 5 Speed.

Here's what's going on.

1:When I start the car, it sputters, and puffs out a little bit of BLACK smoke (Which means burning excess amount of fuel), and the idle is rough, then it smooths out after about a min, then slowly smooths out more as the car warms up.

2: Sounds like it is missing, both at idle, and driving range but goes away if you get on the throttle both in boost, and with out boost. both low RPM's and High.

3: Check Engine Light is on, but goes away when you give it gas.

Thinking its MAF related. no dieing at Idle tho. haven't been able to check the CEL code either.

I just t some input on if you guys agree it is the MAF, and if you dont think so, what do you think it is.

I say go and get the CEL read and let us know the code/description. That will help out the most.

This may sound stupid, but if you dont have access to another MAF to check easily. I would do the following:
1) Un-plug the MAF
2) start the car
3) note any differences from the way it currently acts

See my idea/point
I do NOT recommend that you drive around with your MAF un-plugged for long though, your A/F ratios will be way off.

EDIT: ^^or if you can do what LiquidX said, that would be best. haha.

I'm going to but I wanted to know if you guys agreed it sounded like the MAF or you think its something else. just trying to get an Idea because I cant get it checked till later on.

Tried that and it just died unless I sit there and give it gas, I was thinking it's half working, hence why the CEL goes off under throttle

Thanks for the Input FYI

Well then, you know that at least something is right with it. But LiquidX is right, it could be a couple different things and you wont know until you pull that CEL code. We dont want to tell you "Yes, its your MAF", then you replace it and its something else, just pull codes and we'll help you pinpoint it.

If you were able to try my above mentioned suggestion, then you should be able to pull codes, its just as easy. :)

Alright well, I can't get the codes checked till later on in the week because my buddy with one of those reader things (Can not remember what they are called for the life of me!) doesn't get back till Monday so I'll let you guys know.

Thanks for the Help.

i checked advanced and auto zone yesterday, neither had OBD1 readers. probably because its rare to see a car that uses OBD1 around where i live.

It was the MAF guys. A friend of mine found me a Turbo MAF for 15$, so I just went ahead and replaced it, and now the car runs perfectly, and pulls hard as ever.

Thanks for the Help though.
